In case of emergency you're completely right with IRC, and if you get no answer here after a few days.
The forum is just in the beginning (even the devs aren't here  :o  ).
I know how long it took with the Manjaro Forums (english and german), so we'll have to wait.
Maybe I should integrate IRC like I did in the Manjaro Forum?

Existing OpenRC systems (whether arch-openrc or manjaro-openrc) can be converted to the new scheme with minimal effort. Older eudev-openrc ones might need some more tweaking, especially with concern to the desktop: consolekit2 is replaced by elogind. Those with vanilla systemd Arch or Manjaro must first migrate as described. Or, you can install a fresh Artix system.

Afaik the devs are working behind the scenes atm so the tutorial is outdated.

Maybe it's really better to ask at IRC for now.

Something doesn't sound right.  You have a server where 60 devs depend on, and you chose Manjaro-OpenRC, a very stable but "experimental" system supported by one person alone, fixing stuff for the rest of Manjaro at the same time.  And you are trying to do this on the fly, with no reboot.
Have you even started trying to do it and the instructions did not work or are you speculating there may be problems while doing so?
Even thoug I have not done it, it seems pretty straightforward and worked for at least half the people here.

By the ay, has anyone checked what the downloads for artix have been?  18000+/week, the third most popular linux distro on sourceforge.  Pretty scary for a small team of developers to all of a sudden have to deal with a tsunami.  There hasn't even been a formal announcement yet that Artix is out and what it is.

This is not relevant to the thread.  If you want to discuss why I switched from opensuse to manjaro openrc, I'm actually sure there is a discussion about this on the internet somewhere, but if you want to repeat it here, you can post your inquiries in a proper section or thread.  The only thing I will say is that manjaro openrc was exceptionally stable for a longer period of time than a standard suse release, and I liked the relationships I had with the developers and people willing to help me with technological questions.

I started doing them and then realized that what I was reading would likely trash the repositories, so I posted a inquiry on the Manjaro forum and here. Both posts received a fairly chilling response. 

I've been doing this linux thing now for a long long time and I have really gotten to the point, over decades of online communications, to side step purposefully hateful, egotistical and petty posts, regardless if they have content worth reading or not.

I see folks get heated about technical stuff, and that is fine and human nature.  People disagree and things get heated.  But the random and continual trollbaiting without cause, usually by people who don't take the time to read what is being said, this I have no more energy for, might it be from Cmdrtaco or "Fallen Rat".

That being said, I just took a closer look at the long Manjaro thread and it seems that maybe there is no migration from Manjaro openrc to artix because as I read it, artix is based on arch and the manjaro repos that are being renamed in our example as -arch are really not arch at all.  And then discussions take place that I really don't understand about making the manjaro repos an unstable branch.


Has anyone actually migrated from the latest manjaro-openrc to atrix?

I carefully read the instructions and proceeded with the migration. Everything went well. I used Manjaro "extra" and "community" repos for a couple weeks, but then I switched over to Arch "extra" and "community".
My system is not mission critical by any stretch of the imagination however, and I was not overly worried to encounter problems.
Your situation is decidedly different since it is an important production system.
There is likely not any "guaranteed safe" way for you to proceed. I am reluctant to advise you due to your system being so important to your production.
Hopefully @artoo or another dev can advise.

nothing is ever 100% which is why one needs to understand what they are doing and not just follow a recipe blindly.  Tnanks for the time.


 I noticed that the migrate posting on the artix site is pointed at PLAIN systemd manjaro which is very different.

Plain?  Where did you draw this conclusion?  Specifically the instructions are directed towards two communities of users.  Manjaro-OpenRC and Arch-OpenRC.  Why would the rest be interested in changing if they hadn't already done so.  Those running with OpenRC "needed" to change as those two other projects would no longer be supported.
Since you are in this game long you do realize that with dynamic rolling distributions things change, and in this case they change from both sides.  20 days ago Manjaro-OpenRC and Artix were not what they are today, If they have been consistently upgraded that is.
Still, does this mean the instructions are no longer valid?  I suspect not.  There were wikis on both Arch and Manjaro on how to install OpenRC.  They no longer work.

I still do not understand what is the basis of your fear that it will not work.

Migrating from Manjaro

People coming from Manjaro OpenRC, will additionally need to run:

pacman -Rdd manjaro-system
pacman -Rsc manjaro-tools-base \
            manjaro-system \
            mhwd \
            mhwd-db \
            manjaro-firmware \
            manjaro-settings-manager \
            intel-ucode \
            lsb-release \
            rpcbind-openrc
mv /etc/conf.d/rpcbind /etc/conf.d/rpcbindmanj

I think I now know your confusion as part of the instructions talk of removing systend stuff, which is the fake systemd stuff that were created in Manjaro=OpenRC to cope with the rest of the distribution.  In artix there is no need for them.  The last time I tried alone to convert manjaro to openrc I failed miserably, so Artoo was doing some good work at it.

You may also consider runit for the transition.  It is almost having two parallel supervisors of sysvinit (OpenRC and runit) but it will give you extra security that all essential services/daemons will be up and running.
I don't know how you would substitute kernels on the fly without rebooting.  I really like to learn this piece of sys-admin-creativity.

This system has given me so much confidence of stability that it is the first time I am running with a single kernel, 4.12
Even in Debian I always kept a backup kernel in case the new one run into a hw glitch.  Manjaro 4.13 was about the only kernel that couldn't boot on my machine.

The instructions seem clear enough if carefully read and understood. I don't think adding non-standard runit to the equation would be helpful however.
The OP is concerned about bricking his system.

I had a successful (VM) migration from Manjaro-OpenRC stable to Artix.  The stuff about naming the repos community-arch etc. are just about not having the names clashing rather than saying you need to move over to Arch repos, for example mine are named community-manjaro etc.  I also haven't had(/noticed) any breakage even though I am on the Manjaro stable repos.  That said, this is just in a VM which doesn't get any serious use beyond me testing stuff on it, so there is no guarantee your experience would be like mine.  My actual HW install still hasn't been migrated ;)

I think moving over to Arch repos should not be delayed too long....Artix is based on Arch, not Manjaro. Sooner or later I think issues will arise. No point in not switching asap after migration. Just my opinion.

The instructions pointed at on the announcement on the Manjoro forum are different that the ones pointed to on the main sight.  I followed the ones from the Manjaro forum.  I think everything went ok but it still boots up with Manjaro decoration and the Kernel is not defaulting to the designated LT.  That made me think about what Manjaro did provide which was very current packages and kernels.
