Re: Artix installation

This is because s6 has an early getty that starts before the service-manager. If you login really fast (which was always possible), you can login before services start (which includes mounting drives). It doesn't have anything to do with display managers or not. The rule of thumb is to just wait until udev is done (the screen flickers).

Just for completeness sake, this behavior has actually just been changed. I've noticed some s6 users seem to get confused by the early getty. I like it since it is a good fallback in case something goes wrong in s6-rc (i.e. you screw up the database), but it opens up the possibility to "log in too fast". There's a relatively easy "best of both worlds" approach to this though. Now, the default bundle includes a oneshot service that brings down the s6-linux-early getty service with an s6 command. Instead, agetty-tty1 spawns tty1 over it after filesystems mount. Basically, when s6-rc starts, the original early getty gets killed and s6-rc takes it over. AKA, it should be basically impossible to log in "too early" now.

Like before, it looks like elogind somehow isn't started first. Could you post the contents of /var/log/lightdm/current ?

There's a couple of strange dbus messages, but yeah lightdm looks fine. The problem is that xorg doesn't start for you.

Quote
[   128.160] (II) systemd-logind: logind integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling logind integration
[   128.161] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
[   128.161] (EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

No access to the /dev/dri/card means no graphics. I have no idea how this is happening however since elogind should be running. I'm going to assume there's a race condition here, but this race actually shouldn't be happening because elogind is a dependency of lightdm. Could you post the contents of /var/log/dbus/current ?

That makes no sense. The dbus-s6 script logs to /var/log/dbus. Something is terribly wrong here. What's the output of "s6-rc -a list" ?

When stuck at boot process, the ttys are not available. Ctrl+Alt+F1~7 not responding. Caps Lock key can toggle the LED, keyboard recognized by Artix.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
artix-xfce-s6-20201211-x86_64.iso installation does have ttys, please refer to OP and reply #7. These are all obtained from artix-xfce-s6-20201211-x86_64.iso installation.

Artix iso test installation report:

artix-lxqt-s6-20201219-x86_64.iso: install successful, boot successful.

My only problem with this ISO was:

    1) s6-init not correctly starting sddm.

I continued with my project on the 20AWS3MS00 ThinkPad T440p with
Intel i5-4300M(x4) 3.3GHz CPU and Intel HD4600 GPU.  The installation
and subsequent boot went fine, so the python-lib difficulty inside
calamares is now fixed.  The only difficulty was that sddm would
not log me in when I supplied my uname:psswd.  I pursued the path
described earlier in this thread by pebble, and issued commands
from the Ctl-Alt-F1 runlevel:

    root:> s6-rc-bundle-update delete default sddm
    root:> reboot
    -----------------------
    root:> s6-rc -u change sddm

The sddm/lxqt desktop then started successfully, and I was able to
log-in to lxqt.  That minor trouble still exists with the way in
which s6-init tries to start sddm, meaning that every time I now
boot to runlevel one and start sddm manually via "s6-rc -u change
sddm".  So, after starting the desktop manager I got a fully
functional connman network manager, and my few personalizations
(udevil, emacs, mc, gkrellm) installed successfully and updates went
forward with no problems.

I have a fully functioning Artix distribution arising from the
artix-lxqt-s6-20201219-x86_64.iso easy installation tool. Cool.

Put these in /etc/rc.local:
Code: [Select]
s6-rc -d change sddm
s6-rc -u change sddm
So, hopefully, you won't need to do it manually. If it still fails, add a 'sleep 5' line before. We're still working on a fix in s6.

Hi nous,

I tried the startup in rc.local that you described.  After a few attempts I
got up to:

<file: rc.local >
sleep 20
s6-rc -d change sddm
sleep 20
s6-rc -u change sddm
</file>

but the system still issues me two copies of the warning:

s6-rc: fatal: unable to take locks: Resource temporarily unavailable

at the Ctl-Alt-F1 runlevel.  Perhaps the M.2 SSD that I am using is
just a bit too fast.  Anyway, I am fine with starting the sddm manually
for now.

I did putter around inside /var/log for a while, and looked carefully
at /var/log/dbus/current, but none of the logs that I examined seemed to
reflect the difficulty involving s6-rc and the display manager.  If you and
dudemanguy name a particular log-file for me to monitor, I can certainly
include that on my next post.

s6-rc: fatal: unable to take locks: Resource temporarily unavailable

I also get same warning if issue s6-rc without sudo, maybe privilege.
I take back above line.
I put "ntpd -q" in rc.local and the command ran, not privilege.

Also put
sleep 5
s6-rc -u change lightdm
in rc.local, got same result as gbarrick mentioned.

Artix iso test installation report:

artix-lxqt-s6-20201222-x86_64.iso: install successful, boot successful.

My only problem with this ISO again was:

    1) s6-init not correctly starting sddm.

I tried the latest weekly iso, and got the same difficulty as
before: sddm would not log me in when I supplied my uname:psswd.
The approach where I remove sddm from the s6-rc-bundle, and then
start sddm manually again works to give me a usable desktop
environment:

    root:> s6-rc-bundle-update delete default sddm
    root:> reboot
    -----------------------
    root:> s6-rc -u change sddm

I have a fully functioning Artix distribution arising from the
artix-lxqt-s6-2020122-x86_64.iso easy installation tool.  I have
included my Xorg.0.log and /var/log/dbus/current files in their
state immediately after the failed log-in, just in case they yield
any useful information.

You last Xorg log looks fine, so perhaps sddm is running but without switching your TTY. You don't have to put a sleep delay before starting sddm. I want you to try this in rc.local:
Code: [Select]
sleep 5
s6-rc -d change sddm
s6-rc -u change sddm
and press Alt-F7 once boot is complete (or Alt-F1 though F7). If this succeeds, append chvt 7 to your rc.local.

Hi,

          I still get the complaint:

s6-rc: fatal: unable to take locks: Resource temporarily unavailable
s6-rc: fatal: unable to take locks: Resource temporarily unavailable

when I try to change over to sddm from the rc.local script:

<file: /etc/rc.local />
sleep 5
s6-rc -d change sddm
s6-rc -u change sddm
</file>

This behavior persists when I crank the sleep number up to 10, 20 or 40.
I do not get the sddm in runlevel 7.  It could still be my own stupidity, but
so far the only path that works for me is to issue the "root> s6-rc -u change sddm"
when I login at runlevel 1.   I'm aware that the rc.local  is _the_same_thing_
as what I'm doing 'manually', but it does not work.
