desktop freeze after a few minutes on new installation of GTK community SOLVED

So the desktop just freezes on me after a few minutes, 3 times now, on a new installation, haven't changed much at all, just running
Epiphany browser and Firefox. Haven't used the system much or installed anything/made any changes as I had a little trouble finding a driver for the Realtek USB wifi (AUR packages did not compile but found another).
Well, will try a couple things first and see.  Btw it froze 2x in Mate 1x in LXDE so it's not the DE causing it. Maybe a browser issue

This is probably hw specific, what are you seeing this issue on? Make, model, CPU and graphics card would probably be helpful to know in this case and might even get some helpful replies if you're lucky. Also check the logs for any error messages of course. :D

Maybe, but I don't have anything like this problem in my other 2 distros on same PC, ALT Linux 9 SysV starter kit and Deepin 20 (systemd).
Happened now 2 minutes ago, was able to recover pressing Ctrl Alt Delete, that got me back to login manager.

But, it appears the problem is a full /  ..

Is this normal when the partition is ca. 18 GB?

Ok, I suppose it is back to a smaller install image .. I did like what I saw of the Community edition.

Got disk space down tp 1.5 gb free but the graphical package manager no longer showing any packages..   pacman seems to work

Allocate more space for / partition. 18G is fairly small. Sooner or later, you will hit the limit. I don't know what the comminity iso installs. My normal install takes less than 10G on /.

I find the command
Code: [Select]
# du -hs *
useful to find what is using up space, it can take a while to complete if it has to search a lot of stuff though. Perhaps if you have not already done so then look into package cache management in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, if space is short then just updating regularly will soon fill it. ~/./local/share/Trash is often a good place to find ...trash... and then browser caches can fill space rapidly too, you can set a cache size limit, perhaps there is some stuff that accumulates under ~/.cache you can live without, but be careful what you delete of course.

Thanks! I reinstalled with Mate live iso. The freeze seems to somehow be connected to screen lock/power settings. This is a desktop so power saving is not critical. What happened precisely is that if leaving the machine for a longer period it would be session locked with password even this was turned off wherever I could in power/screensaver settings. Then after giving the password I would have a frozen desktop, but still be able to move mouse cursor. It did happen once after reinstalling but I was able to make the machine at least shut down correctly after tapping the power button a few times..  Have now turned off everything I can find in power/lock/screensaver settings. I don't need session lock as this is a desktop pc at home, can it be turned off completely?   (I think it should not be a problem again with all I can find turned off)

In some systems, light-locker is causing the freezes - perhaps races with MATE's own screensaver? Uninstall it, if present.

On my desktop PC (or laptop without battery) running xfce, I remove the xfce4-power-manager package.

Thanks again, have followed all suggestions, was going to install nvidia anyway.
Yesterday had something I've seen on several distros: a freeze running Firefox, no problems switching to brave. But this is just an observation.. idk    As for the question what is the Gtk community edition it is a larger graphical install iso with some nifty stuff set up.

Hello,

A maybe silly question: do you have a swap partition?

It happened to me one day to install a Manjaro forgetting to create a swap partition: as soon as the RAM was full, the system froze...
I did not understand why before realizing my mistake.
