Nvidia drivers causing hard lockups when launching X11

I've got an issue that I cannot for the life of me figure out. Basically, whenever I laucnh X11 using startx on Nvidia drivers, Openbox (but it happens with any other wm) works fine for 5-15 seconds, after which the system hard locks up, with no mouse movement, no switching ttys or anything. I can gracefully shut down by pressing the power button or using the magic key, however. I have tried using different driver versions including dkms and regular, different kernel versions including the regular and hardened kernel that I usually use, disabling all autostart programs in openbox, using a different window manager, using different xorg configuration files as well as no config files at all, and unplugging all peripherals. I have socklog set up but I can't see it at the time of the crash because logs get cleared at reboot and I can't figure out how to stop that. Currently running 5.10.10 hardened and nvidia-dkms 460.32.03-1. Any help would be appreciated. Oh and using nouveau does work.

Okay, the system is not freezing anymore and I don't have a log from when it was, but please don't close this thread yet because it will likely happen again soon at which point I will be sure to save the log.

What's your Xorg configuration for nvidia? You can boot from an installation media or livecd after a freeze, mount your drives and copy existing logs somewhere. BTW Xorg logs are preserved in *.old files after reboot.

Hi,

Did you install also your CPU's microcode?

If not, do that too

The issue has come back but now I have logs. Intel microcode has always been installed and nouveau is manually blacklisted in addition to whatever the nvidia proprietary driver does.

Please check this link and this link too, both look as a similar case issue

Thanks for the quick reply. The issue on the nvidia forums was about intermittent freezing, whereas in my case the computer never unfreezes after it happens. However, adding
Code: [Select]
__GL_MaxFramesAllowed=1
seems to have fixed it, but considering it took a week after the last time the issue subsided to it randomly coming back again, I'll have to wait and see.

It seems to me as solved.

Therefor, I am marking it as so.

Do not hesitate to reopen it, if you have any future problems.
