[SOLVED] problem with lightdm and video coming back after suspend

Hello friends,

I maintain a computer for a relative. I set it up with the cinnamon openrc  iso and keep it up-to-date. After yesterdays updates, It just booted to a black screen. I booted with an artix stick, chrooted in and disabled lightdm. After that, cinnamon started with an appropriate ~/.xinitrc. She can deal with logging in from the console.

After the computer suspends, and I try to wake it up, the computer wakes up but the video does not come back. I don't think it is a hardware issue. Here is the list of updates:

if you think, it's lightdm issue, test another DM... like sddm-openrc, please

I don't think it is a lightdm issue. But I do think lightdm was effected by whatever the issue is. Two things happened at the exact same time after those updates.  1)  X wouldn't start with ligthdm enabled. That is why I chrooted in and disabled it. That solved the problem of X not starting. 2) But after that, video would not resume after a suspend, even thought the computer did wake up (based on fan noise and lights).

So right now, I have no DM at all, she's starting x with startx. But the problem of the video not coming back after suspend is still present.

Try different kernel, since it was updated.

Thanks for the suggestions! The graphics are radeon HD 4200. I tried downgrading to linux-5.10.16.artix1-1 but that didn't help. Maybe this old box just needs to be upgraded. Could you please reply and give me the link for the old versions of packages. I'm sure I've seen it but I can't find it now.

I tried linux-lts and linux 5.10.16.artix1-1, the version of linux that was working up to the point where the problem began. I am just going to mark this as solved and chalk it up to needing to upgrade the hardware. I did try a current devuan-live stick and every thing worked fine including resume, so the hardware might not be broken, just old.
