Mate iso - not easy to use existing partitions to install 08 March 2021, 04:48:16 Using the latest stable (not weekly) Mate iso, I'd already created some partitions with gparted. But using the graphical installer I didn't find an option to just install on a preformatted / partition, even though gparted is on the iso, so it's quite easy to partition using that before clicking the install link. I had to delete / (although I could keep the others I had already made, gpt-bios and swap) and recreate it in the GUI install dialogue. That worked OK. The only option that came close was to overwrite an existing partition, but that reformatted it to ext4 with no choice given, and I didn't want that. Perhaps I just missed the way to do it. Overall the procedure is very impressive and professional, with the nice slide show during the install process.(Having finished the installation successfully this is more a general observation than a question, btw.) 1 Likes

Re: Mate iso - not easy to use existing partitions to install Reply #2 – 08 March 2021, 13:18:59 Yes. But from there, I couldn't click next to proceed as it was greyed out until I deleted / and remade it, I could only click back. It's quite possible I missed the correct method, although I had a few tries at this point and did about 3 installs before I got things to end up how I wanted.

Re: Mate iso - not easy to use existing partitions to install Reply #4 – 09 March 2021, 14:20:56 But what? It seemed that the only way the graphic installer recognizes and becomes aware of the existence of partitions is if they are created in the dialogue, as I just noted the swap partition pre-created with gparted isn't mounted and used in the resulting installation. So, add that to the fstab later. A lot of installers do let you use existing partitions, that (apparently) wasn't an option here. I think it's a similar point to this here:https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,2276.msg15248.html#msg15248It isn't an unsurmountable problem, if this is the case, just something to be aware of what the limitations are, in order to find a way around it.
