It worked! Maybe?

nvidia-settings is now functional.

Correct resolution.

We'll see if it freezes up or not... If it works for 24 hours without screwing up, I'll mark it as solved.

I've spent a few hours doing things that would have normally frozen the video immediately. I'm satisfied that it was some borking of the xorg config that was fixed by nvidia-xconfig.
