recent nvidia driver update borked muh rez

After recent nvidia driver update, I no longer get proper resolution. XFCE Display Manager is stuck at 1024x768. Also showing me an obviously fake refresh rate which is not supported by the monitor...

I uninstalled nvidia driver, fallback to the [neaveau] (or however you spell it) driver, and I get proper resolution, but it's a very unstable driver and crashes video so much the computer is unusable. I can still ctrl-alt-f1 to get back to console, so I know it's just the video.

So, I reinstall the nvidia driver. Resolution is stuck at 1024x768, stretched on the monitor to fill the 1920x1080 that it should be using... At least I can use the machine and it's stable.

How fix rez? Everything has been fine for almost a year. Suddenly, fail...

Running artix openrc xfce...

last update nvidia is only rebuild against kernel.
which exactly version of kernel and nvidia you use?

It happened maybe a week or 10 days ago... Maybe 2 weeks?
I've been struggling with it but finally gave up and posted...

linux-5.11.12.artix1-1
nvidia-460.67-6

Proper driver is stable, but no ability to choose proper rez.
Unreliable driver has proper rezolution.

I look around and see people having some resolution troubles many years ago, or when they first install... This was fine for a long time then suddenly quit.

put here your Xorg.0.log with the wrong resulotion

Code: [Select]
cat  /var/log/Xorg.0.log

how you have set up your Xorg server?
your config files you can find in  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA/Troubleshooting

you can install nvidia-settings and set up properly your graphics card again

It's a default setup from when I installed Artix in the first place. I never messed with it because it worked...

When the screen locks, it shifts back to proper resolution. I type in my username and password, it logs me and and screws up the resolution again...

This part of xorg.o.log obviously stands out:
Code: [Select]
[    10.776] (II) LoadModule: "nv"
[    10.776] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nv
[    10.776] (EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)
But I don't know what an 'nv' module is. NVidia? NouVeau? Who knows!?

If it meant to say "NVidia" then why is it I can reinstall the driver as many times as I want, and it still lies and says it isn't there?

I reinstalled the kernel, too... Makes no difference.

Code: [Select]
$ sudo pacman -Syu linux nvidia
:: Synchronizing package databases...
 system is up to date
 world is up to date
 galaxy is up to date
 extra is up to date
 community is up to date
warning: linux-5.11.12.artix1-1 is up to date -- reinstalling
warning: nvidia-460.67-6 is up to date -- reinstalling
See the part where is says REINSTALLING. Go on. Do it 50 times. Reboot 50 times. It's installed.

This also doesn't explain why everything was working and then it wasn't.

I tried using the archive: https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/n/nvidia/

I did the "pacman -U url/to/package.archive.ext"

Same problem persists with older versions... So, downgrading to a previously KNOWN WORKING version doesn't work.

Something fundamental has been altered without my knowledge. Something other than the driver.

After trying a few different driver versions, pacman has lost it's mind:

Code: [Select]
$ sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/n/nvidia/nvidia-460.32.03-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
loading packages...
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "nvidia-utils=460.32.03", a dependency of "nvidia"
:: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
      nvidia

:: Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: unable to satisfy dependency 'nvidia-utils=460.32.03' required by nvidia
$
So, yeah... derp.

Lols, if I try drivers that are only a few days or weeks old, pacman will install it. But if I got back a few months, it has this fake dependency nonsense and refuses to do it for no reason. Hurr durr, it's dependent on itself if it's old... Everything is fine if it's new... Hurr durr durr.... That's dumb. I can't take it seriously.

I'm dumping the nvidia driver for now. It may be stable, but the screwed up resolution is unusable. The nouveau driver will lock up in a few minutes, but at least I can get a few things done real fast before it falls apart...

Everything was fine... Then some secret alteration was made during a driver upgrade, and it's completely screwed up. Even the older drivers that used to work don't work anymore. Why do things like this? It's clearly not an accident...

Two interesting aberrations...

When running the nouveau driver, and the video borks up, if I wiggle the mouse around for about 15 seconds, everything flashes and the mouse starts working again. The screen is otherwise frozen with a few odd artifacts, but the mouse moves perfectly...

When running the nvidia driver, and I leave it idle long enough for the screen to lock... The lock screen is proper resolution. But, as soon as I put in my password, it's back to the screwed-up nonsense again... Is it switching drivers? Why? Why would there be more than one anyway?

I'm going to ignore this for a while and see if anyone has any ideas... I'm burned out on it and don't want to waste any more time right now.

@camosoul; I've an Nvidia GPU and I'm using it without any kind of problem with the last nvidia driver 460.67-1. Looking your xorg log (line 10.774) I can see that it has been generated when you was using nouveau driver not nvidia driver. This is the line: "10.774] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 0" and some line below "10.774] (II) LoadModule: "nouveau"".

I'm using the nvidia-dkms 460.67-1 and it work perfectly and the same version for nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia. You are using the pre-built 460.67-6.

Try the nvidia-dkms version and, my personal opinion, you'll solve the problem.

PS: the nv is another driver and you can ignore the message. I remove almost all the GPU driver and that message appear as a warning; you can ignore it.

That was the initial installation using the openrc xfce .iso

If this is incorrect, why does the installer do it?

If this needs to be rebuilt/rewritten after installation, it would be nice if the documentation would say so.

Is there any information on forcing x config to be rebuilt correctly?

Funny, everything was working just fine up to now... Why did it suddenly change?

I just installed all of this and am going to reboot now... Fingers crossed.

I installed all that stuff and all the same problems still persist.

nvidia-settings still refuses to function.

duckduckgo found this... I didn't know nvidia-xconfig was a thing. Since mine is already broken, and the .conf file doesn't even exist... I figured I'd give it a shot.

Code: [Select]
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig

WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.

New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
I've got a bad feeling about this...
