I couldn't test much recently since I barely have any time, but I managed to find out a few things. It seems like an installation without any nvidia driver works fine, without any freezes. However that is not a satisfying solution.
I'm currently trying out my old gtx 970 and so far there were no problems. I did miss an important detail about the new graphics card though: it's been overclocked by msi. So if the old GPU works for some time without any similar issues I will try to adjust clock speed of the new gpu to see if that fixes the issue.
