Devuan was a little better at gaming for my low end laptop 07 March 2022, 00:30:37 Devuan had more FPS(45-50 FPS compared to 30-35 FPS in artix), less stutter and ran less hot( 55 C compared to 63 C in artix). I was playing wow wotlk. Same setup, only different kernels obviously, and different wine versions. But both stock kernels of their distros. How could that be? I use exact same stuff, lutris and all. That could mean for low end pc's, bleeding edge might not be that better?I got mobility radeon HD 4530 and Core 2 duo CPU. 4GB ram.

It's entirely possible one of those had a performance regression at some point for your hardware (well wine isn't really hardware dependent but I digress). It would take some work to track it down exactly,

Also, there are different default configurations, those dlls, directx and so on.Kernels in Debian/Devuan and Artix are configured and built slightly(?) differently, but both setups are consistent and comparable in performance. Personally, I've never experienced any issue, even minor, with kernels in both distros. I use LTS kernel with Artix BTW.Quote from: ironcrystal – on 07 March 2022, 00:30:37That could mean for low end pc's, bleeding edge might not be that better?Yes, you don't need that bleeding edge with old hardware. You definitely don't need the latest kernel and may stick to the LTS one with Artix.Debian/Devuan distros are generally considered as a good choice for old hardware. I used to run Debian on rather obsolete PCs for years and can't complain. Some folks even run oldstable on old laptops and say that's OK - given they don't have high expectations regarding freshness of software. 1 Likes

That would be one potential way to se if the kernel is a big issue. if you get similar results on artix with all 3 kernels then perhaps we could conclude that wine is the culprit? If you get different result in artix then try running devuan again and install the liquorix kernel in in and test and see how it behaves?
