stupid screen locking problem

Sometimes when I allow the lightdm to lock the screen, it is impossible to log back in. After entering my password, the screen stays black. I have to switch to another VT (Alt+Fn) to kill lightdm.

I have light-locker, mate-screensaver, and xscreensaver installed. mate-screen-saver is running. I don't even want screen locking, but it seems to happen by default. I'm runnning MATE DE. Can I uninstall mate-screensaver and light-locker, and just use xscreensaver? Xscreensaver has better more fun screensavers.

Edit: The development of light-locker seems to have stopped in 2019:

and there is a lot of issues:

Edit 2022-05-01: This looks like a relevant issue specifically:

Doh! Doh! I saw that post, but I incorrectly thought the OP said  his computer is freezing and that he can't switch VTs so I thought he had a different problem.

Anyway, I guess I'll just try uninstalling everything but MATE's crap screensaver.
