[solved] SDDM fails to start when booting, shows up after manual restart

TL;DR:

It looks like, if NetworkManager is used, SDDM fails to start when booting if NetworkManager didn't connect yet, if /etc/hostname isn't set. In my case, only /etc/conf.d/hostname was set, but not /etc/hostname. After creating it, SDDM started normally, no matter if NetworkManager was connected or not.

------------------------------

Hi all!

When booting my notebook, SDDM fails to start. I only get a black screen with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left corner, nothing happens.

When switching to terminal 1 and restarting SDDM manually (/etc/init.d/sddm restart, using OpenRC btw.), SDDM starts normally.

The Xorg log does not look different I think:

Here's the log directly after  booting, with SDDM failing to start:

The log when SDDM starts after the manual restart looks exactly the same (except for the times obviously).

Thanks for all help tracking this down!

Maybe, this is some timing problem?

I added an extra dependency for SDDM to /etc/rc.conf, to make it start a few moments later:
Code: [Select]
rc_sddm_after="cronie"

… and it shows up normally …

Definitely, sddm starts before something it needs. I doubt it's crond, most probably it's elogind. You can edit /etc/init.d/sddm and add "after logind" in depend() - no need to tweak the global rc file.

I also think that this isn't caused by cron being started or not, I just wanted to delay the start a bit.

But  also don't think that adding a dependency to logind will help, as elogind already is started way before sddm …

I just compared what Gentoo/OpenRC does to setup SDDM (on the said notebook, I has Gentoo until recently, without the SDDM not showing up problem).

Gentoo does it in a slightly different way, first, we had an xdm init script that could be configured to fire up SDDM, now, we have a dedicated script called "display-manager".

However, the init script bringing up whatever display manager has almost the same dependencies as Artix's SDDM init script. But not the very same. I thus simply changed the SDDM init script to declare the dependecies like Gentoo does it. And: The problem is gone. SDDM shows up as expected.

I think this is a bug in Artix's SDDM init script, maybe not showing up everywhere (I migrated three machines from Gentoo to Artix recently, and only on my Notebook, the problem showed up. Maybe because I use NetworkManager there, and OpenRC's net config on the other two).

TL;DR: This patch makes it work:
Code: [Select]
--- /etc/init.d/sddm.orig   2022-01-04 18:13:45.000000000 +0100
+++ /etc/init.d/sddm        2022-07-23 19:08:04.919197791 +0200

Can I report this to some bugzilla?

Re: SDDM fails to start when booting, shows up after manual restart

The 'after logind' dependency should cover 'use dbus', as elogind depends on dbus ('need dbus' in init.d/elogind). Please, test without the 'use dbus' directive and report back. We'll implement it.

Re: SDDM fails to start when booting, shows up after manual restart

This actually works as well (only replacing "want logind" with "after logind", leaving out the last two lines of the above patch).

I just realized you're an Artix dev ;-) Always nice to speak to upstream directly! Thanks for fixing this!

Re: SDDM fails to start when booting, shows up after manual restart

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work …

When I tested this yesterday, SDDM showed up each time.

I however noticed that SDDM doesn't seem to adopt my locale setting (German). When it shows up after booting, the displayed language is English. When I restart SDDM, the locale is respected and I see SDDM in German.

I experimented with exporting LANG in /etc/sddm/scripts/Xsetup (which is executed via the DisplayCommand setting in /etc/sddm.conf) and setting the LANG in /etc/default/locale. None worked, first time to show up, SDDM's language is always English.

However I rebooted the system several times to check this out (because as soon as I restart SDDM, the locale is set correctly). And I noticed that sometimes (not always), SDDM still does not show up when booting, and I have to restart it manually (which always makes SDDM show up).

Could it be that this somehow depends on whether NetwotkManager is connected or not?! As when it's not connected, some services' startup is delayed until it's connected?!

The odd thing is that I never had this problem on Gentoo, although the setup is identical …

A dbus related patch for SDDM was present but not applied in the build of the current sddm-0.19.0-8 package.
This has been corrected in sddm-0.19.0-8.1 which became available a few minutes ago in our testing repo.

Is it possible to install that single package for testing?

Sorry, I'm very new to Artix and pacman …

The only SDDM version currently available on Gentoo is 0.18.1 btw. – is this a regression? Would not be the first time that SDDM breaks due to some update!

sure - just run:

Thanks for the info! But alas, this version also shows the exact same behavior:

First try with a fresh boot: SDDM starts, but only a black screen with a non blinking white cursor is shown. No mouse cursor, nothing happens. After manually restarting SDDM, it starts up normally.

After searching and reading all kinds of similar bug reports and forum posts, I read something about /etc/hostname.

Actually, I didn't have /etc/hostname set, but only /etc/conf.d/hostname. So I created /etc/hostname. Three times in a row, SDDM showed up normally after booting after that.

WTF?!

Could that really be the issue here?! As said, this only happens on my notebook (Lenovo ThinkPad E480), the only machine where I use NetworkManager. On the other machines I migrated from Gentoo to Artix, I use OpenRC's network setup through /etc/conf.d/net and a /etc/init.d/net.lo symlink …

Re: SDDM fails to start when booting, shows up after manual restart

So, it seems SDDM accesses /etc/hostname directly? Anyway, OpenRC supports both hostname paths and IIRC /etc/hostname takes precedence over /etc/conf.d/hostname. Which installation ISO did you use? Recent ISOs save that information in /etc/os-release.

I used artix-base-openrc-20220123-x86_64.iso
