Service root-ro command failed with exit code 32

After updating the system goes in "dinit recovery mode" and I cannot boot since most of the services fail to start.

Code: [Select]
dinit: Service root-ro command failed with exit code 32
[FAILED] root-ro
[FAILED] tmpfiles-dev
...
All services have stopped with no shutdown issued: boot failure?

I saw dinit being updated is it related maybe?

I am postponing the update in x86 because of this.
Is it just me?

I certainly can't reproduce this in both of a fresh VirtualBox instance and my computer (x86, mind you).
I can only say, it depends. What's your /proc/cmdline when entering recovery mode? The only change I did to dinit-rc 5 days ago was adding tmpfiles. And Adding $@ so that init can read whatever people put into cmdline (solving this).

Also, If you downgrade to dinit-0.18.0-4 (keep dinit-rc for now since the only change is tmpfiles-related) through an Artix live ISO and chrooting to your root partition (should still exist in your /var/cache/pacman if you don't run pacman -Sc), does the issue still happen?

Sorry ARMtix has still dinit 0.18.0-4, only dinit-rc is updated I have 252 updates and I did not look well the phone screen.

/proc/cmdline from recovery:
Code: [Select]
loglevel=4 console=ttyS0,115200 console=tty0 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw rootwait resume=/dev/mapper/root resume_offset=5973248 rd.log=file

/var/log/pacman.log:
Code: [Select]
[2024-06-23...] [ALPM] upgraded dinit-rc (0.2.9-1 -> 0.4.7-1)
Strange did I have 0.2.9-1 before?

I have older version only 0.2.3-1 and that does not work too.

I do not see any log in /run/initramfs/ (cause of rd.log=file).

Alright, I can safely say that this is probably unrelated to dinit and Artix's implementation of dinit. Nothing odd from your /proc/cmdline either. Since this is on ARM, this is possibly related.

Speaking of holding off x86 update, what is your dinit and dinit-rc package version on your x86 system?

I built and installed dinit-rc-0.2.9-1 and now:
Code: [Select]
dinit: Could not load service network.target: service description not found.
dinit: Could not load service sshd: could not load dependency.
All services have stopped with no shutdown issued: boot failure?

Not sure what are the .target deps.

In x86:
Code: [Select]
system/dinit 0.18.0-5 [installed: 0.18.0-4]
system/dinit-rc 0.4.7-1 [installed: 0.4.6-1]

Re: Service root-ro command failed with exit code 32

Reply #5
.target deps are only available after dinit-rc-0.3.0 and all new -dinit package are built against that.
I think you can safely upgrade your x86 system though since it's definitely unrelated to the problem you have on ARMtix. Unfortunately I have no ARM system.

I have a RPi 4B and everything seems to be fine.

Code: [Select]
[mobin@Mobin-Mehdi-RPi ~]$ sudo pacman -Qi dinit-rc

I personally debug these kind of issues with "init=/bin/sh" kernel parameter. When /bin/sh comes up, I use that command to see what's wrong. For "root-ro" service the command is "/bin/mount -o remount,ro,rshared /"
Code: [Select]
[mobin@Mobin-Mehdi-RPi ~]$ cat /lib/dinit.d/root-ro
type    = scripted
command = /bin/mount -o remount,ro,rshared /
restart = false

Then run the command, post the output and probably dmesg in here. Note: I'm not sure it does work on ARM systems, I do that thing on my x86 PC.

I set it:
Code: [Select]
setenv bootargs loglevel=4 ... rd.log=file init=/bin/sh

From there and from dinit r(e)covery I ran the command and no output.
I have dmesg from dinit recovery, with "init=/bin/sh" I could not write a file.

PinePhone needs a patched kernel so I have linux-megi from Danctnix.

I updated only dinit-rc to dinit-rc-0.4.7-1 and after rebooting it was fine.
I have btrfs and I used the backup before updating all the packages.
I do not why I had old version and how it was working since it was a previous version of dinit-rc-0.3.0.

Again I updated all the system and "Service root-ro command failed with exit code 32" error.
I am holding back the kernel since some time by now so it is not that.

I added log this is the error:
Code: [Select]
mount: /: mount point is busy.
       dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
Can this be related to btrfs?

I removed ro in root-ro service and all works fine so far:
Code: [Select]
command = /bin/mount -o remount,rshared /

Just me had old version of dinit-rc before 0.4.7?
Code: [Select]
[2024-06-23...] [ALPM] upgraded dinit-rc (0.2.9-1 -> 0.4.7-1)

I checked on my rootfs that I use as VM and a new installation weird upgrade there too.
After upgrading again I have root-ro error and I cannot use QT apps.

I installed again manually with basestrap using other sd card to avoid the update.
I have root-ro error and I cannot use QT apps.

I tried "dinitctl logcat root-ro" in the dinit r(e)covery as shown here but I did not work:
Code: [Select]
dinitctl: connecting to socket: /run/dinitctl: No such file or directory
@davmac do you have some suggestion maybe?
