Title: WiFi not recognised... BroadCom - ASUS PCE-AC88 - How can I get it running?
Post by: questionBot on 30 July 2020, 16:16:45
Hi there... I have no acess of any kind to a LAN ... so I have to use WiFi... but my wifi is not detected when I boot into the base iso-runit... I have tried booting into the i3 iso-runit but no luck there either. The current Arch Iso has the wlan0 able to be seen and activated and connect with no issues, same with Anarchy script install iso... but Atrix seems to be lacking the drivers. It is not just you as a test I booted Manjaro LiveIso, ArcoLinux and EndevourOS... all could not see the wifi.

So, any ideas on what I can do for this? I assume I need to install some drivers? I have had problems installing stuff on a live iso as the directories are often different form a hardware install.

Thanks!

have you installed linux-firmware?  maybe you need install drivers too - see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless

Try a weekly DE ISO (e.g. LXDE), as those offer convenient helpers for connecting to wireless networks and contain the latest kernel device drivers. If all goes well, you can do a clean base install from there in a terminal.

That sounds like a good idea.. I'll try that tomorrow, though I luke the idea of sable isos : )

have you installed linux-firmware?  maybe you need install drivers too - see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless

can you install on a live iso? Usually the package manager fails. Is there a web searchable atrix repo I can download a tar for and then install from a usb or something so the live iso has internet access?

I'm still a little confused about how the repo works. Like if I am running "runit" Artix, is there a seperate repo for that, which installs the serveries for run it over systemd. Stuff like that, more reading I guess. I assume I can just pacman -U /root/Download/packagename.tar.gz from https://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/any/linux-firmware/ ?

Welcome to Artix.
A good place for you to start is the Artix wiki here: https://wiki.artixlinux.org/

If the weekly iso as suggested by @nous doesn't work, follow the instructions at the link provided by @alium‍. It will explain how you can determine what chipset your broadcom wireless uses and thereby learn what driver needs to be installed for it to function.

Best regards.

Still no luck on this...

I tried both the weekly for base install and the LXDE... neither could connect to the wifi and ip link list would return no device..

I downloaded from arch the linux-firmware (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/any/linux-firmware/) by clicking on the mirror link on the menu on the right.... I used pacman -U ./filename and it installed, or seemed to.. but I couldn't see any diffidence and as this is a live iso a reboot would reset eveything.

I also downloaded both B4 and B4.classic
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/b43-firmware/
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/b43-firmware-classic/

but the pacman -U ./filename command would not work on them....  any idea how I can install those ones?

Any other ideas?

TL;DR

TL;DR
  • How do I install the "b43-firmware.tar.gz[/i]" "b43-firmware-classic.tar.gz[/i]" files, as and pacman -U ./filename  would not work
  • After I install linux-firmware-20200721.2b823fc-1-any.pkg.tar.zst - Is there anything else I should do like restarting something ro make it active. I can not reboot as I am in a live iso and it will reset.
  • Any other suggestions I could try, or information commands I could copy for you to look at?

There is simply no way around reading the arch wiki on AUR, pacman and makepkg.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/pacman
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_User_Repository

Thanks.. but, of course, I have already read those and can not seem to find out how that can help me. Maybe I did not understand it, the information is pretty dense.

makepkg -si in a directory that is archived from the the b4files atrs. did not do anything.. said "cannot stripbinary required for object file stripping".. I'm going to try and download base-devel and install that and try again, but again, this is a love iso and I am not sure these are even installing correctly anyway.

I found this thread on the endevour forum with help of duck but I couldn't apply it to my system
https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/asus-pce-ac88-wireless-adapter-not-working/2374

The take away is what I needed to run
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod wl
sudo modprobe brcmfmac

but no luck

I give you one hint, the only one, you are trying to install a source tar with pacman -U, which will not work naturally.

isn't makepkg -si how you install source?

makepkg -si create from PKGBUILD and source archlinux package (packagename-packageversion-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst) , which you can install with pacman -U

Which distro you used before?

archlinux/artixlinux is designed for advanced linux users. using clickable distribution before help now  not much  :-X , when you must use commands in terminal.  don't give up!

if you really need old b43 driver (are you sure about that?), you must first learn, how you can this package create

maybe you can tell us some about your hardware ;-)

Code: [Select]

I have been using Arch for a few years, but as I said the live iso the wireless just works.. so I had no problems. Once installed xorg and herbstluftwm everything is pretty seamless when you have a working pacman and yay...

I've been using VoidLinux on my laptop for about a 6 months and NixOS for a few weeks before that..  and I really liked void, but I missed the Aur and the Arch support, so I went looking for ways to make Arch use runit.. that is how I found you guys.

if you really need old b43 driver (are you sure about that?), you must first learn, how you can this package create

not a 100%... but it is a good place to start lol

Actually I think it may be brcmfmac as the listing of my pci returned "broadcom limited device 43c3 (rev 04)" and ducking that returned people talking about brcmfac but there is nothing in the arch pakage search thing for it.. so I think it is just b4? I get no errors doing modprobe -r brcmfac  and modprobe brcmfac or w/e... I also use sv restart NetWorkManager as well.

Interesting... ok... thanks a lot for the help from everyone in this thread. I guess as arch gets more mainstream you'll have more people like me turning up : )... oh well.

I have to go pick up the kids and do Dad stuff, but I will look at this tomorrow when I am pretending to work in my office!

Thanks again... (hopefully less spam tomorrow and just a solution post!)

you still use breoadcom-wl driver, but this driver ended in error, say dmesg. please uninstall it (pacman -R or -Rcs broadcom-wl), reboot and after reboot
Code: [Select]
modprobe brcmfmac

and send new lsmod and dmesg logs

modprobe brcmfmac

I already tried these commands
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod wl
sudo modprobe brcmfmac
sudo sv restart NetworkManager

reboot and send new lsmod and dmesg logs

but evey time you reboot it resets as it is a live iso.. not an actual install? Or is there enough in the live iso for me to install without the net at all? Then once I have a base system booted I can do all this kind of stuff?

WHAT??  why don't you wrote it right at the beginning that you're slapping in live ISO? incredibly!!
you don't have a system installed  ::)  of course live iso will be resets.... it depends on which ISO you use. normally it should be possible to install without the internet

I assume you still have a system (linux) installed. so boot it and see which driver it uses. The instructions on how to find out are above.

this is the easiest way to migrate to another OS ;-)

Man... I thought I had this... but then it failed for me... but maybe you guys know what to do next....

Basically I got a older iso... instead of the weekly... and this only seemed to work on the console iso as well but when I logged it the OS seemed to have recognised my wlan0!

then the problems started... I couldn't see it in the rfkill list...

I tried to initialise it anyway... can someone please check my commands (might be minor miss spelling as I do not have bash auto complete!)

Code: [Select]
> wpa_passphrase <SSID> <PASSWORD> >> /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-wlan0.cong
> wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0  -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-wlan0.cong

but there is no successful message.. instead I get all sorta of crap... but I forgot to photo it.. After posting this I am going to go back and take a photo, log back into windows and edit this post.

I also tried just trying

Code: [Select]
rfkill unblock all

But this did all sorts of strange stuff and kinda stopped here
(https://i.imgur.com/IfcqvRf.jpg)

Also side note... sv restart dhcpcd fails....

- EDIT -

Note that phy0 says "wireless" so I thought... meh.. why not! and this happened.. so I did the command again with wlan0....

why do you always want to go the hardest way?

so easy to install new system:
download ISO with some Desktop Enviroment
booting live ISO
I'll see if everything works, which driver are needed, etc.
I'll set up a network
I will install a new system (using instalator)
I will set up a new system (using wiki archlinux's and artix's wiki)
reboot it to a new system...done

so easy!  8)
no, we will be slapping on the spot for a week due to the unset wifi card.  ::)  ;)

The networking dose not work in the desktop one I tried.. But your right I normally do it off a terminal prompt.... I'll download and try all the different desktops.. See if any work.

artix-mate-runit-20200210-x86_64.iso

I've tested all of these now... none of them have working networking for me.

I'll try again with a selection of the weeklies... and I think just for fun I'll do the other versions.. openrdc and s6. Just in case... I am not holding out hope.

It frustrates me as the base arch linux just works... as dose void and Nix, the ubuntus... it is just teh arch versions like Arco, Atrix, Manjaro that do not seem to work for some reason : (

i said boot to live ISO, set up Wifi, (that you will be have internet connection), and first after install.

Can you have internet connection without your Bradcom wifi card? If not, better set up wifi in live iso first.  ISO with DE have mostly networkmanager, wchich make all easier.

I'm almost there.. I can get an install running by using the install script from a desktop iso and just not caring about the internet... Then I can install my drivers using the info in this thread and upgrade.

I would still like to have my minimal install though.

How do I do a no internet minimal install from the base iso or from a desktop iso. basestrap hangs trying to access the mirrors I did try with - Uc, and variants of that.

TL;DR : how do you do a minimal install with no internet?

Don't know for sure in this instance, but if you need extra drivers in the ISO you might be able install them in the ISO, put the package binary on another USB, mount it and use pacman -U or even unpack it and stick them in the right dir yourself, and then probably manually run # depmod -a  but obviously they won't be there again if you reboot it, you're only installing to the ISO ramdisk. Perhaps you need extra firmware for Broadcom too.

I'll try that, thanks.. but I would settle to know how to install the base version without internet like I can from the desktop versions.

I kinda tried something like this...

i don't know, if i want help you, if you ignore me :D :D

but your driver should be brcmfmac and firmware is in  linux-firmware  8)  we need just verify it. but you want play unconditionally  with b43 :D

as i wrote you before, boot to new instance of ISO,
Code: [Select]
lspci -v
which driver is used? (probably wl, but we need brcmfmac)
last dmesg show, your driver wl from package broadcom-wl does not works and is very restricted https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless#Installation,
Code: [Select]
modprobe -r wl

Code: [Select]

after again

I pretty much have a working solution now, what I am looking for now is a way to install the BASE version of the disto with out internet... when you run the installer off a desktop live iso it allows you to install without internet, but when I try it off the base iso it will not allow me to do it.

i don't know, if i want help you, if you ignore me :D :D

but your driver should be brcmfmac and firmware is in  linux-firmware  8)  we need just verify it. but you want play unconditionally  with b43 :D

I'm not ignoring you, but I do think there is a communication problem. I'm not the best communicator.

It was actually me that first talked about the brcmfmac driver and unloading it and using manprob and all that. The thing I posted last was just a similar technique i used on another laptop to get a live iso to use installed drivers.

again, as I said a few times, rfkill dose nothing. rfkill list returns no output at all, if I use rfkill unblock all it shows errors.

Fixing the wireless issue is one way - plugging in via ethernet cable could be another.
The base installer is not an iso like the others - it's a bootable tool that allows you to install the packages on the target drive. You can copy it over and modify it - but surely you will have the same connection issues as you have now? This is detailed here for Arch, so the procedure will differ slightly.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Offline_installation (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Offline_installation)
Or you could create a local repo on another USB or drive partition:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman/Tips_and_tricks#Custom_local_repository (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman/Tips_and_tricks#Custom_local_repository)
That doesn't seem to say anything about package signatures though, don't know if that matters. Download the packages you would do in the install process using a working system first, then install them from the local repo, or use some shell loop to install the entire directory contents with -U
Code: [Select]
$ sudo pacman --cachedir=/path/to/dir -Sw base base-devel plus any other stuff

OK, so forum's admin please mark this topic as SOLVED.

It's not actually solved.. just almost solved.

I still need to know how to install a minimal install either from the base iso or a desktop iso without internet. Once I get that I can then get it all working an post my solution for anyone else coming to the thread.

I haven't had a chance to try #######'s post yet.. but will when I get home.

Code: [Select]
$ sudo pacman --cachedir=/path/to/dir -Sw base base-devel plus any other stuff

would I need to chown into /mnt before I do that so it is installing into the "new" system and stuff?

The command given is wrong, it doesn't change the root path at all, only the cache dir.

Use basestrap which is part of artools-base package, installed on all live iso.
It is the equivalent to arch's pacstrap.

Side note... Linux5.8 is out now... https://9to5linux.com/linus-torvalds-officially-releases-the-linux-5-8-kernel-now-available-for-download

Maybe if I am super lucky a weekly build in the near future will just work like the Arch/Void/NixOS isos that are out now.

I remember trying that and it would freak out about there being no net.

Seriously, I think you lack the very basic knowledge, and we are not your answer bots to acquire this knowledge.
Please read some documentation first, if that has been done, we will of course help users.

But what you do here is just annoying.

To answer, it will be my last, basestrap requires naturally an internet connection.

I realise that, which is why I asked a bunch of times.. a single question that no one seems to even address. I get my communication skills are not the best, but if somone actually answered or even spoke to the question asked, this thread would be pages less.

How can you install a minimal instillation with no internet, as you can install from a desktop iso with no internet... so how (if possible) can you do a minimal install with no internet?
