Title: [SOLVED] gnome-flashback ISO
Post by: LibreHacker on 19 September 2020, 14:19:30
I try gnome-flashback and see it's work not bad.

Maybe create gnome ISO without gnome-shell and others heavy apps from Gnome?

Hi.

Can you be more specific of what is not working?

In my installed VMs and bare metal, I am not facing any troubles.

Gnome ISO w/o Gnome shell, is just not possible, because It is the main Gnome package.

If you like such an installation, you can use base ISO and install all from scratch.

gnome-flashback can work without gnome-shell, but gnome-tweaks can change themes and others config for gnome.

Others components for gnome (i don't try alls gnome packages) working with gnome-flashback whitout gnome-shell

With gnome-flashback can be good "light"weight version Gnome

I see what you mean - I haven't tried it recently, but since Gnome went to the "3" series with the icons down the left side, it had a built in classic mode like Gnome 2, giving a more traditional desktop experience with less hardware requirements. The closest thing currently (although not exactly the same) would be Mate, because that's a fork of Gnome 2, and preserves the same look. XFCE is not that different either as it forked from Gnome before Mate. There used to be some config option in Gnome so you could choose whether the desktop started in regular or flashback mode, perhaps at login or in the settings. Possibly you could do this even in the live iso if you log out then back in.

Well, we are not considering to publish any other ISOs, as we already have enough.

I hope that, after finishing the new calamares presentation, it will be published (I am currently working on it).

Gnome Classic / Fallback / Flashback were all originally terms for the same thing:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2185161 (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2185161)
So it seems that's no longer true, and Gnome Flashback is now a distinct standalone variant.

I am closing this issue, ever since, no gnome-flashback ISO will be published.
