Title: [SOLVED] External Optical Drive
Post by: dxrobertson on 26 February 2021, 15:26:32
Anyone have any experience with using an external optical (dvd/cd) drive?  Is it plug and play, any config, drivers needed?

Having to replace my old Acer laptop with internal drive and will be purchasing an external drive.   Will use the drive to play CD and DVD, and hopefully rip and burn as well.

Thanks in advance for assistance.

I have tested it for you. It works out-of-the-box right away, no problems whatsoever:
On a Dell Optiplex GX780 PC, with Artix Linux OpenRC Cinnamon, updated to the latest patches.
I just installed VLC and libdvdcss.
I connected an external DVD writer to (2) USB ports and inserted a commercial DVD. It played flawlessly with no stuttering.

I'm amazed how well Artix is crafted, it's a real pleasure to see a distro that "just works". This used to be the attribute for Linux Mint. There, of course, the external DVD works as well.
Have fun, AndrĂ©   ;)
