manjaro are not waiting around to see what this means they have already migrated most of the github repos to gitlab.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Microsoft actually uses git and github so I don't think they would run it to the ground like they did with Skype but who knows.
I think manjaro are afraid of Microsoft charging for github use etc.
I certainly don't blame anyone for bailing. I mean it's Microsoft, they don't have the best track record when it comes to this stuff. But it would be pretty dumb for them to radically change github. That would just make everyone flee to gitlab or something overnight.
GitHub - Microsoft - subdivisions of USA Inc. - comme ci comme ca?
Not that I know much about GitHub as a company, looking here they seem to be currently funded by private capital:
https://github.com/about/facts
The Microsoft purchase gives them access to capital for development from the financial markets, and perhaps GitHub might be spun off again in future.
Another cat among the pigeons: https://twitter.com/gitlab/status/1003764673454342144
Is that the ugly cat from poltergeist?
It gives M$ access to all the source code including private repositories. Maybe they just want to lay off half their developers and steal what the opensource community has already done so they don't have to? Maybe they just want better access to the source code to find bugs quicker to help the 3 letter bug exploiters write their zero days? Yes I'm wearing my tinfoil hat. It's M$, you have to.
Maybe this was engineered by Gitlab to increase their business ::)
That is an understatement. It might be said that MS's obsessive behaviors and mistreatment of the public might actually have sparked the GNU revolution. That Nat Friedman is the spokesperson for them now, in no way makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
