Hehe, instead of all the modern noisy mosfet circuitry, it just switched contactors around. :) It was basically like an indirect clutch. Something that current electric vehicles can learn from cause they're really badly designed (maybe with some exceptions like the renault zoe, ugly as it is kept a normal powertrain and it's easy to swap batteries around).
Guess why stuff like this lasted for 100 years.
