tintin, it is possible that your ntp-client is starting before your network connection is established, which could cause the name resolution error.

At this page, it details "The Depend Function" (https://github.com/OpenRC/openrc/blob/master/service-script-guide.md)

Does your ntp-client.conf file contain this:
Code: [Select]
depend() {
before cron portmap
after net
use dns logger
}

and your ntpd.conf contain:
Code: [Select]
depend() {
use net dns logger
after ntp-client
}

?

something with DNS?

my current configs
Code: [Select]
# /etc/conf.d/ntp-client

# Command to run to set the clock initially
# Most people should just leave this line alone ...
# however, if you know what you're doing, and you
# want to use ntpd to set the clock, change this to 'ntpd'
NTPCLIENT_CMD="ntpdate"

# Options to pass to the above command
# This default setting should work fine but you should
# change the default 'pool.ntp.org' to something closer
# to your machine.  See http://www.pool.ntp.org/ or
# try running `netselect -s 3 pool.ntp.org`.
NTPCLIENT_OPTS="-s -b -u \
        0.gentoo.pool.ntp.org 1.gentoo.pool.ntp.org \
        2.gentoo.pool.ntp.org 3.gentoo.pool.ntp.org"

# If you use hostnames above, then you should depend on dns
# being up & running before we try to run.  Otherwise, you
# can disable this.
rc_use="dns"

Code: [Select]
# /etc/conf.d/ntpd

# Options to pass to the ntpd process
# Most people should leave this line alone ...
# however, if you know what you're doing, feel free to tweak
NTPD_OPTS="-g -u ntp:ntp"

is it possible, as I mentioned above, that net is not required in your ntp init files?  If net is not required/connected at the runlevel that ntp starts, it will initially fail to find a network server.  If this is the case, and the services required for ntp to run properly do not start until your user/login runlevel, ntp will run correctly after this run level has been reached. i.e. the ntp service will not update before xfce starts and the network is up

What are the services  enabled on your different runlevels and, as mentioned above, do you have the correct required resources under a depend section in the init files?

You also may need to enable the UEFI network stack in your BIOS, this will allow network access before you reach the later runlevels.

Could you please let us know what your runlevels/service configurations are, what depends are listed in the init files, and enable the network stack function in your BIOS, then try to reproduce the issue?

Post by: Danny on 15 May 2024, 23:57:28
hello again deepforest

i am pleased to help you, but i still need some information, as mentioned above.
what are the contents of your init files for ntp?

With the incomplete information you are providing, I do not know I can be of much more help.

I encourage you to visit the openrc service scipt guide (https://github.com/OpenRC/openrc/blob/master/service-script-guide.md) and make sure your init scripts for the processes follow the conventions of that document.  If you still have trouble after following those steps, check back in.

cheers

almost solved
 /etc/init.d/ntp-client and adding the sleep 5 line like this:
Code: [Select]
start() {
    checkconfig || return $?

    ebegin "Setting clock via the NTP client '${NTPCLIENT_CMD}'"
    sleep 5;
    "${NTPCLIENT_CMD}" ${NTPCLIENT_OPTS}
    eend $? "Failed to set clock"
}

after  no error at booting, ntpd and ntp-client is started and working but system time is still incorrect

Here, /etc/localtime is a link that points to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Paris :
Code: [Select]
ls -al | grep localtime
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root     32  7 juin   2020 localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Paris
