Wait a second, I didn't realize that you had sddm configured to start on tty7 instead of tty1 (the default). I haven't tried that in my testing yet but maybe that's why I haven't been able to reproduce this. The rc.local trick should work, but the file is actually /etc/s6/rc.local not /etc/rc.local

Hi,

           I get the same behavior (error messages about
s6-rc: fatal: unable to take locks: Resource temporarily unavailable)
when I use the short script in /etc/s6/rc.local for start-up.  It seems
to make no difference whether it is placed in /etc or /etc/s6.

Test install report: On 4 partitions: /, /boot, /home and /var. gpt partition, bios boot.
artix-xfce-runit-20210104-x86_64.iso: Installation successful, boot successful.
artix-xfce-s6-20210104-x86_64.iso: Installation successful, boot fail.

The /var folder on root partition was empty before 1st boot attempt.

Artix iso test installation report:

artix-lxqt-s6-20210111-x86_64.iso: install successful, boot successful.

    Again, the only problem with this ISO was:

    1) s6-init not correctly starting sddm.

    I tried only this latest weekly iso and got the same difficulty as
before: sddm would not log me in when I supplied my uname:psswd.
The approach where I remove sddm from the s6-rc-bundle, and then
start sddm manually again works to give me a usable desktop
environment:

    root:> s6-rc-bundle-update delete default sddm
    root:> reboot
    -----------------------
    root:> s6-rc -u change sddm

    I did not run my experiment with the 20200101 stable iso.

    I have a fully functioning Artix distribution arising from the
artix-lxqt-s6-20210111-x86_64.iso easy installation tool.  I have
included .tar.gz archives of the /var/log before first boot (empty,
I think), /var/log after first boot and then /var/log after
my reconfiguring of the s6-rc-bundle to give me a "by hand"
approach to starting sddm.

  One possibilty that I observed for dealing with an issue like
this is the default behavior exhibited by obarun linux with the jwm
graphical desktop.  They have their system configured to drop the
user at the tty1 console.  If root logs in, the text-mode terminal
continues as before.  If the ordinary user logs in, it starts a
jwm desktop without the bother of running a desktop manager or
a log-in greeter.  This might be an easy way to set up artix-s6 ...
or as I am doing now, just run:

root> s6-rc -u change sddm

from the tty1, then switch back to tty1 and log out the root user.

Artix iso test installation report:

artix-lxqt-s6-20210115-x86_64.iso: install successful, boot successful.

        I had no problems with this .iso.  The lxqt desktop started appropriately
when I logged in from the sddm greeter.  Thank you all for your work on the
s6-init for sddm/lxqt.

Installed on 2 partitions: root and var, ext4 fs, gpt partition, bios boot.
Installation successful, boot fail.
While stuck in boot process (black screen), there was no tty available, Artix responds to Cap Lock key.
Attaching var folder and var partition contents except the lib folder (too big).
