I'm not going to waste my time on the New York Times, but the last time I saw one of these "code generating AIs" in action basically what was happening was that on the left you were typing in plain English what exactly the code was doing. From an academic perspective, that may be interesting, but in practice it's useless.

I would normally agree, but this particular article is worth a listen to or read.  The AI has gotten much further than that and they are struggling with not just code base openness and copy abilitity, but also the ethical issues as the AI is now able to pass the SATs.

Computer - write me some software to make me as successful as Bill Gates. Come back next week, job done! Then the week after I can ask it to build a robot with a 3d printer to do all the chores. Sounds great! ;D

Some time ago i've read something about "AI"  ;) writing code in the way DNA evolves. Which was basically a diplomatic term for throwing sh*t at a wall and see what sticks.
