[SOLVED] makepkg says "not a valid identifier"

Whenever I run makepkg on a  PKGBUILD, it outputs something like this twice:

/usr/share/makepkg/util/pkgbuild.sh: line 30: declare: `package_xdg-sanity': not a valid identifier

does anyone have an idea of what's going on here?
