upgrade kills my kde login 25 January 2023, 05:11:35 Mondays are Artix days so yesterday I booted my Artix installation and upgraded it. On the next boot I could log in but got into a hard lockup seconds after the background image loaded. The entire partition being backed up I recovered from backup.dd image. Repeated the upgrade which involved over 1000 packages seeing that my backup made with is a month old. Same result, soon after logging in a lockup follows loading the background image. The UserMe folder on another partition is linked into the system /home as let's say /home/um. All other users have their homes directly under /home and can log in without issues. So I have an updated system that locks up when the only user with remote linked rags logs in, I also have a backup image of an older instance that works fine if copied back to the system partition with dd ...until it gets upgraded.Where should I look for clues?-- https://tinyurl.com/rahk68hw

Do you see the GRUB boot menu?Yes, I always do the grub routine while using Leap, my goto system. Good menu, everything looks like a go, as-per. I get the DM login dialog, usually my user id preloaded so I just have to enter the pwd. The user environment starts being loaded including this mostly used custom backround sombrero galaxy imagehttps://i.imgur.com/fShcw31.pngthe mouse pointer arrives, and seconds after that the hard lockup with no soft escape. One system or another sometimes goes for a royal dump for assorted reasons, I could just recover form backup and do nothing at all for a couple of months and only then do an upgrade. Chances are the cause will have been written over maybe without anyone ever having noticed it. It's just that I somehow don't feel like doing so.
Re: upgrade kills my kde login Reply #3 – 25 January 2023, 14:36:47 when you say "over 1000 updates", can you be a littler more specific to the nearest 100? Its a horrendously large amount for a single month, even a 6 month old community edition with multiple desktops and a shed load of software only has a whisker over 1000 for 6 months, so 1000 in a single month is flagging up a bit. The point you did the backup, how long before then (in months) was it the last time it was updated? Last Edit: 25 January 2023, 15:08:21 by gavincc

The point you did the backup, how long before then (in months) was it the last time it was updated?Sorry about the confusion, I went and did an encore and it's now up to 1400 but it's megabytes :-)It went up to 382 packageds on this one, before the upograde it was Artix Linux , Kernel=6.0.12-artix1-1 on x86_64,DM=Unknown, DE=KDE, ST=x11,grub2, GPT, BIOS-bootMy apologiesOtherwise nothing's changed = the upgraded system bombs on login. It may be the background image that pops up before the freeze or just xeyes and no background image but it doesn't get past that. There IS this horror message at the end of the upgrade though:error: segmentation faultPlease submit a full bug report with --debug if appropriate.Segmentation faultI wouldn't know where to begin reporting things ...but I've been having suspicious issues involving the data partition where the remoted homes are. Almost on every boot (and necessarily with another OS almost each time) that partition gets a journal replay. I'll have to get to the bottom of this scandal one of these days if I can find the time! I remeber having set for regular checks but don't know if that is stored in the FS or in the OS in some config. In any event an fsck should not automatically include a replay.

CLEARED via UNKNOWN ...Re: upgrade kills my kde login Reply #6 – 02 February 2023, 03:15:45 Did another upgrade and all is well. All this time I never had any problem logging-in as any user whose home is under /home on the system partition and not on another drive to which I linked from under /home.Don't know if the issue has anythiong to do with my other topic haviong to do with frequent journal replays (can't see the exact subject from here).
