Somebody asked me for a laptop for business use, said they were going to costco

I don't know business lappy well at all but all i could offer was don't buy from costco or any discount retailer.

What's a reliable business lappy though?

not knowing what else to recommend, i sent them a link for a newegg search results for business laptop.  I have only bought one new laptop in my life and that was in 2012 and it was a 300$ machine.  The laptop is long gone but the toshiba hdd from it is still running and so is the msata drive i bought for it.  the rest of it dies in drips and drabs.

I know, i know, hardware recommendations are dangerous...

I've used old (never new) Dell business laptops quite happily. I've heard it said Lenovo are better quality but usually they fetch a bit more so you can go a bit newer / better spec with a Dell. Don't know if that's still true so far in the future of (my) computing as the current models! HP made some business models and are a good well known brand name. It would pay to read up carefully on any models that make the shortlist, and search online for discussion of problems on forums as most manufacturers seem to come up with lemons once in a while.

Dell Precision M4800 is the best laptop I've ever worked on. Very pleasant backlit keyboard with full-sized arrow keys and separate pgup/pgdn (very important in linux), excellent build quality (magnesium frame), no hardware whitelists like HP meaning you can plug in any card you like (I ditched the factory intel for atheros), separate fans/heatsinks for CPU/GPU. It sells on ebay for less than $300 with a 4th-gen i7, discrete GPU, 16GB RAM and an SSD. It's THE bargain, considering it used to cost over $2000 new.

Looks sweet.

Thanks you both for the recommends.  I'll pass them along.
