Swap partition not detected

Runit doesn't seem to find my swap partition at boot, I can see a fail message in tty "can't detect the device for" without any UUID following. I have checked my fstab, the swap partition is there and the UUID looks correct. Oddly, if I login and run swapon --show I can see the swap partition instead. It's like the swap is someway mounted later. What can I do to fix this? TIA.
