Login screen broken after recent upgrade

pacman -Syu a few days back broke my login screen.

Booting up the machine looks normal until after the virtual console login prompt.  The screen clears and the X Windows arrow cursor appears.  After a longish pause the screen goes black; then it goes sort of white with vague patterns; then black again.
When the greeter screen comes up the background (DNA etc) looks OK, but there are no boxes in which to type name and password, although there does appear to be an I-bar text cursor.  After a few seconds the screen goes black again and generally stays that way.  Attempts to switch to another virtual console usually fail, and the only available action appears to be powering off the machine.

I am using plasma with sddm.  I have tried downgrading sddm and sddm-kcm to no avail.   X Windows seems to be OK:  booting with a "nox" option and running  startx /usr/bin/startplasma-x11 will often work, at least on the second try.

Login screen broken after recent upgrade

I posted this to the Package Management forum a couple of days back, and then realized that it probably belongs here.  Is there a way for a "normal" user to move it?  The original, including logs, is at:

pacman -Syu a few days back broke my login screen.

Booting up the machine looks normal until after the virtual console login prompt.  The screen clears and the X Windows arrow cursor appears.  After a longish pause the screen goes black; then it goes sort of white with vague patterns; then black again.
When the greeter screen comes up the background (DNA etc) looks OK, but there are no boxes in which to type name and password, although there does appear to be an I-bar text cursor.  After a few seconds the screen goes black again and generally stays that way.  Attempts to switch to another virtual console usually fail, and the only available action appears to be powering off the machine.

I am using plasma with sddm.  I have tried downgrading sddm and sddm-kcm to no avail.   X Windows seems to be OK:  booting with a "nox" option and running  startx /usr/bin/startplasma-x11 will often work, at least on the second try.

You did the update some days ago; did you try pacman -Syu again after that? Maybe the issue has been fixed in the mean time.

Did a pacman -Syu last night which failed to resolve the problem.  However, I have a couple of new data points.

If I boot up with sddm enabled, I get the broken login screen.  If I can manage to get to another virtual console, login, and /etc/init.d/xdm restart  the login screen comes up correctly and all is well.  Basically, the problem is (mostly) resolved by starting the display manager / window manager twice.

Having said that, if I make an application (say, the video player) full-screen, when it quits whole chunks of the desktop and other apps is black.  Minimizing the applications and restoring them fixes the problem.

I'm thinking this is a library or plasma problem, OR some piece of initialization that is being done "late", so that a second try gets things working.

Am I the only one with this problem?  What makes me so special?  ;)

Thoughts greatly appeciated.

Try out of curiousity to install package libprocps, it fixed a similar weird issue with sddm for me few weeks ago.

I'm having a similar issue, I didn't update artix for a month, then just did an updated and reboot today.

Once it restarted, sddm went into an infinite loop and wouldn't bring up the login screen. I uninstalled sddm-runit and installed lxdm-runit and launched that, and was able to get a login screen that way, though lxdm can't launch Plasma in Wayland mode, so I'm back on X11 for now.

I tried both a different sddm theme, as well as installing libprocps, and neither of these fixed it, nor did doing another update.

The sddm log is completely useless now, I"ll paste a section of it since I ran the update.

It pretty much continues for pages saying Operation not permitted on tty1, with no other lines. I believe all the text at the top was before the reboot, and the rest is after the reboot.

I think the text is after the DE gets killed, to get the before you have to switch tty/ssh in the machine and copy the syslog manually.
If there is a conflict with the tty stuff starting too soon for sddm to like it now, try anyway to disable the services that end in: tty1 and tty7.

The tty1 flashes so rapidly that it's hard to see what's being written out and cleared, but taking many, many photos I managed to get two sections of text that seem to indicate what's happening, but really both of them are just telling me that sddm-helper is crashing because it can't grab /dev/tty1, the only thing that's on /dev/tty1 is a standard console login prompt though.

I've attached both captured images.

I managed to get sddm to stop crashing by copying the sddm.conf from a working fresh install to my old install, but once I did that I could no longer login at all, even when I went back to lxdm the sessions were all broken and wouldn't let me login. I think I'm just going to call that old install  toast and start over on this other install...

The one difference between this install and that is that it seems to be using X11 here, and opening it on tty7 and not tty1, but the old install's sddm.conf was so minimalistic that I'm not sure how to configure it to use tty7.

Ok, I managed to get my new install to break in the same way as the old install by adding that DisplayServer=wayland line to it.

If I disable agetty-tty1, then launch sddm with that wayland setting enabled, the whole computer locks up and has to be hard reset.

I guess some sddm change recently broke the wayland subsystem...
