Microphone records gibberish only

Hello everybody,

To make things short, both internal and external microphones are recording only what sounds like white noise or gibberish. I know the external microphone I have on my headset works because I tried it on other computer without any issues.
I suppose that when I installed artix I might not have set up audio properly, I used the xfce image.  I'm a bit at loss about how to go around diagnosing what is the problem exactly, so any help would be appreciated.

It really isn't urgent, because I don't use this pc for work meetings or anything like that, but I still would like to have this working so that my computer works 100%.

Thanks in advance!

I faced the same experience, up until this thread I thought It's a problem with motherboard and battery. but if you face the same problem, it might be a software problem for both of us.

I'll look in to it.

Can you check out of curiousity if you have any "boost/amplify" option toggled or set too high in alsamixer?

that might be the problem for you, check wiki

as for me, after checking wiki, I am amazed that I even have audio output. my setup is so bad

I used alsamixer to set all boosting to zero, however, that did not fix the issue.

After playing around with my computer, I found out that there was some weird behaviour I hadn't seen before.
My laptop is an asus rog strix with a single jack for both input and output. I use some headphones that came with an adaptor to plug it's two jacks into the laptop (not sure if I'm being clear here, English is not my first language). If, however, I plug only the cable for the headphone audio (not the mic one), the laptopp's internal microphone works. If I don't plug anything, the microphone works too.
So with this in mind I used the package alsa-tools, which comes with HDAJackRetask to override some settings.
I simply set the microphone pin to be disconnected, and also override the internal mic one as is, and voilá, I can use the laptop's internal mic no problem.
I don't know if I should mark this as resolved or not, because it's more of a workaround than an actual fix.

Well found!
The actual fix would be to make a separate ALSA hardware profile for that specific laptop hwid that would be published to their hardware database.

I see. Is that something I could help with? Who knows, might help somebody else in the future. As far as I could find, I couldn't see anything wrong at a software level, but I might be wrong.
