[SOLVED] sddm not loading (and other potential issues)

I'll do my best to self troubleshoot and update this thread while also (hopefully) keeping everything clean so others can chime in with suggestions. My time is extremely splintered at the moment and my linux knowledge is still in the "functional, but dangerous", but i'm hoping that this will lead to bug detection or at least isolate some idiocy on my part.

Thank you.

Problem:
System boots to tty1, tty7 shows blinking cursor.  Also happens on a fresh install following artix base install wiki. Problem does not happen with other OS (Ubuntu 20.04)

Additional Details:
  • Both Artix installs seem to hang on during shutdown at: "kvm: exiting hardware virtualization
  • Original Artix install had the following error: "Error stopping sddm" - new install of Artix does not
  • Original Artix install had the following error:  "ERROR: xdm failed to stop" - new install of Artix does not

What I've tried
  • Wait it out for updates
  • Tried manual startx. Resulted in a waiting for connection with .. repeated each line
  • Tried manual lxqt-session. Resulted in a missing xcb entry even though it was found.
  • Installed fresh Artix - Same problem above
  • Installed another OS (Ubuntu) - Works

Things to try when I have time
  • downgrade the kernal
  • downgrade mesa

I will update this more as I get time and find my notes. Thank you for any feedback or questions.

Put here /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code: [Select]
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Of course  you have  installed sddm-openrc, what say openrc?
Code: [Select]
rc-status
what happens at starting sddm-openrc?  Fail it or start and fail Xorg?

That is really a lost cause, if you not know if xserver start or not.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log (part 1)
Fresh install doesn't have an Xorg.0.log - 99% sure I ran 'pacman -S xorg --ignore xorg-server-xdmx'
I will try again to be absolutely sure.

I do not have the machine in front of me at the moment, but I did save the logs.
Here is the last rc.log entry. If this doesn't help, I will get the status as soon as I'm able.

you need fix first this:
Code: [Select]
ERROR: opentmpfiles-setup failed to start

you start sddm and xdm ? both thogether? you need start sddm OR xdm (here you must select sddm for starting)... so only one service which starting manager is enough :-) (minor problem).

I see no problem with your xorg server, seems it start poprerly...so problem will be in sddm/(xdm) and  opentmpfiles-setup (sddm need working opentmpfiles)

same problem with opentmpfiles has another user: https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,1321.msg9290.html#msg9290

comment this line in /etc/tmpfiles.d/postgresql.conf
Code: [Select]
# h /var/lib/postgres/data -   -        -        - +C

i prepared merge request for fix it in our repo.

This fix has been merged and will be available once mirrors sync, thanks for the report and sorry for issue.

can you please test if sddm starts up now without any problems? (if opentmpfiles-setup boots properly)

I think the only way to start sddm w/openrc is to have xdm do the startup.
That's how my Plasma/openrc functions.
The file etc/conf.d/xdm must have the line:

DISPLAYMANAGER="sddm"

Best regards.
We should try to be kind to everyone.....we are all fighting some sort of battle.

you're right, sddm-openrc was removed from artix before 2 weeks, did not works.

@InkStone, remove sddm-openrc, set xdm, fix postgresql (see above) and try if start xdm

Hello everyone,
My apologies for the delayed reply.

The good news is that sddm and my desktop (lxqt) appear to be working again!
Thank you so much for patching the problem!

The bad(?) news is that it appeared to be working after an update about two days ago, then briefly stopped working again following an update, then started working again after an update sometime last night.
If that is of interest, i can post logs pacman, etc. I'll keep this thread unsolved for just a bit longer in case it stops working again.

The ugly news is that I'm encountering two other issues that cropped up around the same time as the sddm issue.
  • During shutdown udev takes a while to shut down and eventually has to timeout and gives up on workers to finish (i have not plugged anything new into my machine).
  • Additionally, kvm hangs the shut down while exiting hardware virtualization.

If these are worth chasing in this thread, i can provide information.
If not, I will do my best to look into them (and check already reported bugs) before making a new post.

Thank you to everyone providing this distro. I've only had two instances of breakage like this since i came over from the manjaro openrc dist. Very happy with the distribution, especially given the rolling nature of the updates.

This seems to be an Lxqt issue...I have not had any such issues using Plasma w/openrc. My hardware is a 10+ year old Dell Inspiron 1525 (but, I am not so patiently awaiting the arrival of a new Star LabTop MK IV https://starlabs.systems/pages/labtop-mk-iv  ;D )

I hope you can get this issue sorted.

Best regards.

So it's happened again.
I've used the machine to do OS and game updates (Steam and one Lutris game), as well as browse Firefox.

The only new error I've noticed was in another thread (https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,1536.msg10546.html), about the lxqt sddm theme having an issue.

The question is:
  • Should I bother troubleshooting hoping to solve the issue and maybe stumble onto some bug or problem that will help the distro (maybe).
  • Or accept that sometimes a cause is lost and start fresh.

I'm fine starting fresh, but I can't offer this group much in the way of technical assistance, so I'm willing to delve into a problem if it helps.

And now it's back.
I've done nothing to the machine other than run my Ubuntu copy for firefox....

This is .... obnoxious.

I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the OS when time allows.
I'll have a copy of the problematic OS while I transition in case someone has an idea they want to check.

Thanks to everyone that took a look.
