DEPMOD=/doesnt/exist?????

I tried that (normally use my own PKGBUILDs), and the kernel will boot, but it seems unnecessary (apparently it's about a newer version of kmod that's broken)
kmod 29-3 seems to work perfectly (it is also used by arch). So what's the rationale behind this?

Like I said, kernels build without DEPMOD=/doesnt/exist.
