freedesktop.org / dbus errors, cant use NetworkManager

Hi, and first of all: Great Distro!

I installed Artix, coming from arch, but because im forced to dual boot with windows and felt lazy, I installed xfce4 artix and then uninstalled the xfce4 packages. The problem I was facing however was the mess of dependencies xfce has, and even pacman -Rd xfce4 did not do its job.
I found this on the internet while searching for a easy solution: "pacman -Sg xfce4 xfce4-goodies | awk '{print $2}' | xargs pacman -R --noconfirm libxfce4ui" and it worked flawlessly.
This should not be the cause. All the packages that were uninstalled were irrelevant to the issue, and reinstalling xfce did not fix it.

I really dont know if that is the cause, but I dont know what else would be, but now everything from freedesktop.org broke.

changing the hostname in nmtui for example only brings:
> Unable to set hostname: Method "SaveHostname" with signature  "s" on interface "org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.Settings" doesn't  exist

There are a few instances of stuff like that happening, and I searched the internet already, but found nothing like it.

Help is very much appreciated!

what would be your ideal outcome?

Have you installed a different desktop?  Are you wanting to run without a desktop?  What desktop experience do you want?

well I already have a pretty nice i3wm setup from scratch, and im using it right now, everything works fine.

I really dont want to reinstall, since that is the easy way out. The problem I have is not the desktop experience, but that basically everything from freedesktop.org does not work. The programs are installed, and I even reinstalled and restarted them with rc-service ... restart, but with no luck.

I think it's your dbus that's in need. That error is when nmtui sends a request to the dbus address "org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.Settings" and it finds - like it says - it doesn't exist. So check /var/log/pacman.log and see what got removed on that command, look for any dbus or network manager stuff, could give some ideas what is missing. Also check if you have some dbus service being started successfully by your init.

As you can see it removed garcon, I installed it, tried to rc-service garcon start, but apparently garcon.service does not exist.

How would I be going about checking if my dbus services are getting started accordingly on openrc?

I don't see any obvious candidates so far as I know, but I guess something did that.

It's probably something from the 15 xfce4 desktop packages, not the xfce4-goodies extras, so you could just add the ones on that list back again one by one (so far as deps allow) and see at what point it starts working again as a trial and error method.

Ok, I just read what garcon actually is on the aur

and thaught that had to be it, but apparently not.


I was pretty sure that it was the command that broke the system, but since it didnt remove anything from dbus or freedesktop, im not so sure about it anymore. It seemed like the obvious

Well reinstall the packages again, (at least those from the xfce4 group) reboot and find out, surely it's only going to take 10 or 15 minutes at most and you could spend an age reading up on possibilities otherwise, you can uninstall them afterwards. It will probably be quicker to try and narrow it down like that unless someone appears who can point you at the precise solution. (It's also the case with pacman that if you have the current version of a package in your cache it won't even be downloaded again, you are just decompressing and deleting something already on your fs if you reinstall then uninstall some packages unless or until versions change.)

I reinstalled xfce, but still nothing. This basically means it had nothing to do with me deleting xfce, so Ill change the original post.

Aha, that fits with the original error message if Network Manager isn't running to provide that dbus address. There are some inherent problems with Network manager that have been discussed and solved fairly recently if you search the forum history, it often requires some config change - although I can't remember exactly what as I don't use it myself  :D .

Sadly nothing helped, since for me not even nmcli device show works. There is no output. I will reinstall the distro now, since I didnt want to do it with a easy fix solution, but the fact that its my laptop and I frequently have to connect to various connections makes it unusable

I'm using Artix XFCE OpenRC on several machines.
I preferred to use conman as network manager and sddm as login manager.
But we can do without this kind of application.
