NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. 17 March 2025, 16:35:54 Long story short:I have recently installed Artix on this laptop. I previously was using Funtoo on it, but since that distribution is not supported anymore I'm migrating. The install was done on a brand new, blank SSD. There were no issues with installing. Now I want to copy my /home folder over from the Funtoo drive to Artix.I have an external enclosure that converts a NVMe drive to USB-C. I have previously used it successfully to read/write from/to NVMe drives on this machine when it was running Funtoo.I installed the previous SSD in it (it's a Samsung 990EVO 2TB BTW) and plugged it in. It does not show on the desktop as a mountable partition. dmesg says this:[ 4856.141531] usb 2-1: new SuperSpeed Plus Gen 2x1 USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd[ 4856.153111] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=152d, idProduct=0583, bcdDevice= 2.09[ 4856.153126] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3[ 4856.153132] usb 2-1: Product: UD0401[ 4856.153138] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: UD0401[ 4856.153142] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 00A2018C0008However, lsblk doesn't list it as a drive (only shows the internal SSD and its partitions), nor can I access any of the partitions on it.What am I missing?(edit: I have also verified that the SSD plus adapter combination work on another computer with USB-C; and the USB-C on this laptop works correctly with another device - a USB hub) Last Edit: 17 March 2025, 16:58:50 by stamasd
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #1 – 17 March 2025, 17:36:26 OK, for some reason after I rebooted the system now it is seen as a drive. However when I try to mount the partition as user, it gives me: "Failed to mount: no object for D-Bus interface"How do I solve this?
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #2 – 17 March 2025, 18:04:33 Hm, okay after another reboot and plugging the device in and out several times, it works now. It seems very random that it's recognized or not and works or not. I am reasonably sure it's not the hardware because it worked flawlessly until a few days ago.
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #3 – 17 March 2025, 23:28:54 Downgrading might be worthwhile if it worked recently, the kernel sounds a good place to start, as it contains the drive drivers, linux-firmware could be related, you could also look at any file system / usb / nvme related packages you might have installed which could have some relevance.
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #4 – 17 March 2025, 23:45:13 Well, like I said after turning it off and on a few times and plugging/unplugging a few times, it worked. That is without installing/removing/upgrading/downgrading any of the software.
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #5 – 18 March 2025, 01:39:36 Quote I am reasonably sure it's not the hardware because it worked flawlessly until a few days ago. That sounded like trying to downgrade and seeing if it works more reliably would be worth a try, at least to eliminate the software possibility first, unless it's now working so consistently you couldn't test for a difference. And the longer you leave downgrading, the harder it gets. Cables can go bad and get intermittent connections though, and other hw including drive enclosures and computer ports could become temperamental of course. 1 Likes
Re: NVMe SSD in USB-C adapter not working. Reply #6 – 20 March 2025, 15:47:58 Well I'm happy to report that for the past 3 days it has worked flawlessly. I don't know why it caused problems at the beginning, but once it started working it just kept going. 1 Likes
