Partly the License. The BSD License allows you to take the code, modify it,  then publish the binaries without providing the source code.  Lots of developers didn't / don't like that concept.

IMHO because it found itself in the right place at the right time. Same kind of questions could be raised about why PHP became more popular than Perl or why Wordpress is the most popular CMS in the world, even tho it's crap. It's mostly a matter of circumstances, timing and RNG.

bsd had legal issues that prevented it from devolping and meanwhile Linus Torvalds came along with his little side project.  There should be a video about it in off topic that i had posted previously.

i wanted to try bsd but it lacks hw support for many devices and i also didn't liked the demon logo bsd have.
