[SOLVED] file manager and browser integrate for "save as" dialog window

sorry if this a newb question, but i've been trying to figure this out for the last couple of days and i'm stumped

i finished the base install recently and then installed i3 and have been setting things up. i'm new to all this and learning as I go, so it's a slow process lol. I cannot get my web browser (ff) to open the file manager when selecting the 'save as' option when trying to download things and wanting to choose the target directory. instead, i'm greeted with a white screen that takes up the whole laptop screen. i can right click inside of this screen, and 'esc' closes it.

"open containing folder" works with thunar, but not with ranger. from what i understand that is because firefox uses the dbus protocol which thunar has support for but ranger does not?

but if that is the case, then why the issue with the "save as" dialog?

I tried setting each to be the default per the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/File_manager_functionality. Also per that page, I tried  copying the org.xfce.Thunar.FileManager1.service file from /usr/share/dbus-1/services to $XDG_DATA_HOME/dbus-1/services

i generated the configuration files for ranger from the command found on it's archwiki page

i tried setting each as the default in mimeapps.list and mimeinfo.cache

I'm just feeling a bit lost and going around in circles at this point. i saw a post somewhere about configuring firefox to use xdg to open things, but i cannot select a default application from firefox since firefox is not able to show the dialog that allows me to select something through a file manager lol.

am I missing something? is anyone able to help me out?

edit: before anyone replies, just had a bit of a breakthrough. yet another case of me not finding relevant posts due to me not using the correct search terms, just found this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222641

which made me realize there IS a dialog being displayed, but it is not inheriting the dpi settings i have (high dpi display...) and is just larger than my screen. i can move the window around with alt+drag

i need to dig into this some more...

edit 2: figured it out, see below
