How to install openrc artix with and on a usb drive

So ive wanted to switch from arch to artix. Ive chose to use openrc. I wanted to install it on a usb drive and I want to be able to boot to this usb drive edit files/make files and do what I want on the os. But grub doesnt work and I cant boot to it.

Please reply if you know how to do this or have questions about this.

I have a laptop with a non functional NVME drive that I boot and use exclusively from a USB stick. I used a live USB to install the distro onto the stick which was recognised as a drive by the installer. Grub installed normally and I have had no problems with it at all.

I actually have several sticks each with a different distro on for separate use cases. I have also installed from/to a stick successfully on several other old laptops that I have and have never experienced any problems doing so.

What problems exactly are you having?

So what I do is I have a usb stick with 128 gb and it has ventoy along with the iso for artix base openrc. Then I have another usb stick but this one has 60 gb and what I do is I partition the usb drive with 60 gigs and basically install artix and then I have to add grub so I try to add grub. Then after that I go to my main os and go to the "Boot from a drive" screen  and select the usb drive. It then says it couldnt boot.

Could you give a small tutorial on how to install artix to that usb drive.

tldr I cant boot into it after I install it.

Thanks, Devin

I have never used ventoy, but I doubt it makes any difference in this case as you are using it on the live usb.

I just do a standard install using the calamares installer, I pick the usb stick as the drive to install it to (I normally prepare it beforehand with gparted) and follow the steps in the installer.

Are you sure that the usb you are trying to install it to is not faulty? Can you try a different stick?

This is a known problem and there is a thread about this issue, sorry, I haven't time tonight to search for it.

If you open the installer before connecting to wifi, it circumvents the issue.

EDIT: See the wiki: https://wiki.artixlinux.org/Main/Troubleshooting#Applications_won.27t_open_while_wireless_connection_is_active

You might want to consider installing Artix to hard disk instead. Artix LiveISO with file system persistence is currently only considered hypothetically, as a low priority project. LiveISO is only meant as an environment from which to install and repair Artix.
But grub doesnt work and I cant boot to it.
I'm afraid that description is not helpful for anyone trying to offer assistance. See: https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,1923.0.html
and the second link in my signature: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

In addition, there is a ton of resources online about preparing and booting from LiveISO environment, with always the first to check being Arch wiki.

You can't install onto the same USB stick you're booting from. Either boot Artix inside a VM and install onto an attached USB stick or use a second stick. The reason the second approach seems to fail for you is that you probably don't do it correctly. I have a no-HDD laptop that boots Artix installed on a pendrive, so I know it works. Let the installer use the entire stick and finish its job - you can resize and repartition later.

I might have misunderstood the question. Of course, installing (as opposed to copying ISO) to any writable media is possible, even if not practical due to USB flash disks not being as long-lasting as HDDs.

Also, not all systems support automatic booting from USB flash drives. On my system (Gigabyte motherboard from 2012), booting from USB flash is not automatic, I have to enter UEFI firmware setup and manually choose to boot from flash disk. Ordering the boot options doesn't work, because as soon as the flash disk is removed, the ordering gets reset.
