The killer feature of the fanless boxes is they'll never have fans clogged by dust and malfunctioning, but I don't think this is worth the exorbitant premium and a CPU used for compiling will suffer more from heat than a fanned one. As for the HP Elitedesk 705 G4 that was mentioned above, while not a bad deal, it heats over 10 °C more than its Lenovo Thinkcentre M715q counterpart and the fan noise is almost insufferable. They both can be found for less than $100, but I would recommend the superior M715q implementation if you can get your hands on. This thing does WWZ in low-medium 1280x1024 at 50 fps in Vulkan and barely whispers.

the g5 with the 3400 seems a deal though, if your are willing to improve cooling, no?

Mostly correct, 3400 has more MHz,, but what if improving cooling breaks the price deal? From my experience, Thinkcentres and Optiplexes don't need it anyway, don't know how HP botched it in Elitedesks.
I had my hands on quite a few of these mini-PCs over the past years, great performers for their size and electricity consumption. It started with Intel i5 ones and a beast 10th-gen i7, but all were sold after getting a taste of the Vega 11's power packed inside R5-2400GE. I mean, at  €90-110 used (even cheaper in the US) and 45W TDP / 10W idle they blow away everything under the €350 mark.

64gb and 8T is kinda a beast.

@cat herders of linux had a few of these machines she got in a lot and needed to sell, but I have not seen them for a bit.

Maybe not so much in 5 years.  time goes fast.  FWIW, admins here are all volunteers... and they last as long as they have interest which goes down precipitously after graduation and after marriage and a few children :)
