Good News for Mirrors 02 May 2025, 04:26:23 I reached out to panix (www.panix.com) about setting up a mirror on their sizable pipe. For those not in the know, panix is one of the 3 oldest ISPs in the US and well positioned. I am being offered a jointly sponsored mirror on their Manhattan pipe for a reasonable fee that I can certainly afford. As a server, you're probably delivering somewhere between 10 and 20mbps. (And despite that, that's probably a better price per bit delivered than what we can offer, as quality costs, although we can obviously do much higher bandwidth.)>>>> /a>> I have no objection to paying a reasonable chage for what is needed.> The community can use the support and I have a budget that includes such> activities>> mirror1% vnstat -m | grep ate> month rx | tx | total | avg. rate> estimated 866.95 GiB | 9.93 TiB | 10.77 TiB |>> mirror2% vnstat -m | grep ate> month rx | tx | total | avg. rate> estimated 422.89 GiB | 8.85 TiB | 9.27 TiB |>> mirror3% vnstat -m | grep ate> month rx | tx | total | avg. rate> estimated 591.0 GB | 918.8 GB | 1.5 TB |Then this seems feasible. The VC-1 includes 4TB transfers. I'm willing to sponsor 8TB more (12 total). Unless they see a ton of growth and no new mirrors, you won't see any xfer charges. If you want to run Artix on the VC, you'll need to upload a cloud install image. Otherwise, you can use whatever distro you like among the ones we support. If you want to do this, just sign up for a VC-1 the normal way. Once you're up and running, reply to this ticket again and we'll set up the sponsored extra xfers./aThis will greatly expand, I believe, our reliability and reach. Panix has very reasonable fees to begin with, this is about $20 a month. I actually hope to pay a few years in advancehttps://www.panix.com/v-colo/plans.htmlI will likely order it up over the weekend unless there is an objection. I would like one other person aside from me as admin and contact since I am old and expect to die in the not too far off future. It should outlive me. Alex seems sincerely interested in getting us on board and to make a modest contribution with extra bit traffic. Quote Selected 4 Likes
Re: Good News for Mirrors Reply #1 – 02 May 2025, 22:33:26 I, for one, am objecting to this. Paying a provider to mirror an open-source project is something akin to paying a peddler to dispense your own free cookies.@mrbrklyn, please do me a favor and save the money for something better, a charity perhaps. We have more than enough mirrors as it is to keep our users happy, at least 4 of them in major US .edu domain with yuge hoses. Quote Selected

When an institution agrees to mirror, it requires payment. We are, having, with all due respect, some problems with a variety of our mirrors, and I'd like to see this Artix thing grow. I am talking about coffee money here on the widest pipe that I know of on the east coast. If you don't want it, I won't do it. It is not like we don't already have a Panix account.I know that money has different meaning in Greece than in NYC, but this is a city of commerce and it is expensive. But we make money here. The monies spent on Artix is truffles. It wouldn't feed a homeless person for a day. And NYLXS has been planning this support for some time. I am anticipating to move all of NYLXS infrastructure to Panix eventually as it is more reliable, they are free software friendly, and less expensive than our current infrastructure solution.
