Full System Freeze With Firefox on KDE (Wayland OR X11) OpenRC

Basically what the title says: I get a full system freeze (no mouse movement, no audio playback, and can't switch to TTYx) when I visit specific, seemingly unrelated websites. The following websites consistently cause this issue for me:
this forum,
Linux Foundation
gobrush plugin download

Obviously I can live without some of these, but it's becoming annoying to just hit landmines while browsing the internet. I'm forced to reboot the machine every time this happens, it effects the entire system. Basically I'm asking because I have no idea how to debug this and the only reason I'm even able to post is that for some reason TOR (14.5.6) isn't affected. I had dmesg open with -wH and could see the kernel spitting out a ton of garbage before freezing, but I have no idea how to access that log after the system reboots and I don't even know if that's the best place to look. I'm willing to dump whatever logs necessary here, I just need to know how and what to log.

My system specs are in the title but I'll list them out with more detail:

Lenovo T430:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3540M (4)
Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
16 gb RAM

Software info:
16 gb swapfile <- I've seen people say this could be an issue, but honestly this bug happens when Firefox is the first real program I launch inside KDE (meaning there's no reason the OS should even really be thinking about swap)
KDE plasma DE (Wayland mainly but same issue observed on X11)
OpenRC - 0.62.6+ (Artix Linux)
Firefox - Mozilla Firefox 142.0
Kernel - Linux 6.16.1-artix1-1

Thank you in advance, I'm sorry I don't know what logs to post at this time but I'll reply with them as soon as anyone suggests what to send.

Your Intel  GPU is Gen 7, the GPU series runs out of step with the CPU number:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/71255/intel-core-i73540m-processor-4m-cache-up-to-3-70-ghz/specifications.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units

So you might be able to try the various driver options listed here if you haven't already:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics
It seems you have a choice of mesa, mesa-amber and xf86-video-intel, from a quick look. Also there are some other suggestions for dealing with various problems including freezes.

You might find what you saw in the kernel log. The location of which depends on what you use for logging. But under /var/log regardless.
You could also save the dmesg output
Code: [Select]
sudo dmesg -wH > ~/dmesg.txt 2>&1
It has to be worth a look.

Sorry I just copied the fastfetch output lol

When I checked I had both mesa and xf86-video-intel installed. I thought it could be some conflict so I uninstall xf86 video but the issue persisted.

You could also save the dmesg output
Code: [Select]
sudo dmesg -wH > ~/dmesg.txt 2>&1
It has to be worth a look.

I don't think I have any logging software installed, but I'll just run through the output we got from dmesg.txt and just say the things I find concerning. If you need more detail please let me know, I just don't know how "safe" it is to be publishing dmesg outputs.

The first significant error seems to be here:
Code: [Select]
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected.  Restarting 0x2000000.
I wouldn't be surprised if it were a networking issue, as sometimes when it freezes it instantly disconnects from the wifi before fully locking.

It does this a few times:
Code: [Select]
[  +0.000193] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Start IWL Event Log Dump: nothing in log
[  +0.000009] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Device error - SW reset

[Aug24 12:14] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected.  Restarting 0x2000000.

Code: [Select]
[  +0.000051] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Device error - reprobe!
[  +0.004250] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Command REPLY_LEDS_CMD failed: FW Error

[  +0.000003] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: flush request fail

then I get a CUT HERE thing, I don't really know what that means.

Then we get this meaty trace:

Hopefully I didn't expose a ton of sensitive information :)

This seems pretty dire though if it's as unrecoverable after it happens as it seems.

The only thing that seems like it could be related is it might've started happening after the second to last kernel update we received on artix, I don't know when exactly that was though and I can't say for certain that that's when it started.

The other thing that JUST started happening as of today is Spotify causes the same crash, which means it's not only a Firefox problem but can occur in chromium software. This seems sort of consistent with my cursory read of the logs, as it seems to be a networking issue rather than a graphical one.

Do you have the option to disable your wireless connection (better yet, remove all related modules like iwlwifi) and test through a wired one?

I seem to be having the same problem, only I can move my cursor.
So far it only happened  when I was off the docking station(When the laptop is on docking it has ethernet connection), I am also getting this error on dmesg:
Code: [Select]
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.
Some earlier discussions suggested disabling tlp, so I am trying that now.
For me it appears to happen on a bit heavier load(when monerod is synchronizing blockchain, videos running on the browser...)

My system specs:
Lenovo thinkpad X230
16GB of DDR3 RAM
Intel Core i5-3320M

Linux 6.16.2-artix1-1
X11 display manager, dwm
Runit.

If you need any more info, please let me  know.

It could be linux 6.16 causes problems for these Lenovo Thinkpads.
Please test with 6.15 and/or an LTS kernel

Disabling tlp did not work...

I have never done that, could you point me to instructions? Even so, if an earlier kernel version fixes the problem, what would be the following steps?

Thank you for your time.

I basically have the same issue on my ThinkPad X220.

It seems like loading https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4648673 fetches some things that some networking stuff (perhaps iwlwifi) makes the kernel die for some reason.

It also seems like my wireless keyboard's USB dongle interacts with the kernel in some way, as it's far more likely to get random panics when I type stuff.

I'll post a video with this in action, hopefully it will bring more info.

Edit: Here's a video of me demonstrating what I've said so far: https://therealone78.ddns.net/uploads/output.artix.mp4

Edit 2: Here's are my kernel logs:

Just found out the following similar issues, including a bug on the kernel.org bugzilla:

I have never done that, could you point me to instructions? Even so, if an earlier kernel version fixes the problem, what would be the following steps?
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -Sy linux-lts linux-lts-headers
sudo update-grub
Select linux-lts at next boot.

It could be linux 6.16 causes problems for these Lenovo Thinkpads.
Please test with 6.15 and/or an LTS kernel

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME THAT.  I just picked up two of them because they have been rock solid for Linux and I've giving them to grandchildren.  What exactly has been the trouble.

FWIW - Palemoon freezes always but never the system.

No crashes on the LTS kernel for me. Probably issue with recent kernel release.

Yeah I could move the cursor too on X11

Do you have the option to disable your wireless connection (better yet, remove all related modules like iwlwifi) and test through a wired one?

I'll be able to test eth in ~a week, until then I'm just going to stick to the lts kernel.

I'm glad this isn't just me!
