Compiz2.) Openbox3.) Xfce Cool thing about Compiz is, that it can be started by xinit and has some kind of session management - I guess. It is very efficient, very stylish, very easily configurable and has all the tools needed.Would it be against the rules here, posting ""desktop "" "screencasts" with a hemp leaf or a brown cigarre shaped mouse cursour ? never knowHow did you get Compiz and openbox to run on Artix? Did you install the base ISO and from there went about installing compiz and or openbox? Yes an no: each time is a lil different, I am still running Legacy BIOS.Yes, mostly live LXQT which I guess is openbox based. You can use the installer if it works for you, then just stop and remove login manager and start openbox or compiz (fusion-icon) from xinit. The last times I installed not from a base iso but just handpicked the tools - thats Arch Linux Wayhttps://www.youtube.com/@leelanders1317 Quote Selected
Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #31 – 16 September 2025, 13:52:30 I tried to go with LXQT, but ran into issues. Basic issues. The Wifi Connection panel would not open up. There was no clock/timer/stopwatch application. Then shifted to MATE. Loved it, but was disappointed by the slow pace of releases and features. Though MATE was better put together and more polished compared to LXQT. Quote Selected 1 Likes

Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #33 – 16 September 2025, 19:57:08 Linux is open:you can install and configure your own setup with handpicked apps.Desktop Environments like KDE, Gnome or LXDE (LXQT) can be setup by installing a meta package or by chosing each app separately.KDE is the environment and plasma are the apps that are all part of KDE.The difference between a custom Desktop experience and a complete desktop environment lies maybe in the session management.Besides this session managment, any other part can be exchanged like the login manager, the panel, the file manager, the theme and also a wifi and network applet. Many Desktop Environments are installing networkmanager and I had problems with that in the past.Connman is foss and it is a new very fast and reliable network manager and in combination with iwd developed by Intel, it is rock stable here. Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #36 – 05 October 2025, 00:16:19 Late to the party here, but I'll throw in.I use bspwm. It's got some great default behavior (like golden ratio style tiling). I still love XFCE but no longer install it on my system as I just don't ever use it. Other than that, I've tried i3, and that's about all I've ever touched in terms of DE/WM on Linux. I landed on bswpm as I noticed it used the least amount of RAM (not on a low spec machine, just like to use as little resources as possible while still enjoying myself). I'm sure dwm uses less RAM, but heck, bspwm just clicked for me at that point and I was done searching.DE/WM is a very very personal choice as it interfaces with your personal workflow. So I take everybody's opinion on it with a huge grain of salt, but I also really enjoy exploring people's reading and hearing about people's reasoning one DE or WM resonates with them. Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #37 – 05 October 2025, 18:47:36 Wanted to love sway and Hyprland but there's a few minor issues specific to NVidia that eventually built up and made me ditch Wayland.I am on dwm at the moment, with picom for v-sync. It's dead simple and with patches you build it to suit exactly your needs, I love it. Still using Xorg because for now I don't see the benefits that XLibre has over it, don't care much about the display server wars. Quote Selected
Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #38 – 06 October 2025, 02:05:12 Cinnamon user here. I can get any just about any DE to match my preferred layout. However, I can get that layout the easiest with Cinnamon. The next on my list is XFCE, followed by MATE. I can get similar results with a little more work.KDE works okay, but has some quirks being QT based. It works in a pinch. Plus, there are some apps where I like the KDE options better.GNOME is my least favorite of the ones I've tried enough to comment on. It's design philosophy gives me the hives. Quote Selected
Re: Which Desktop Environment (DE) or Window manager (WM) do you use Reply #39 – 09 October 2025, 14:49:27 I use CWM [1]My first laptop had FVWM installed on it by my dad and I used that until near the end of when I was in college. I'd probably recommend that for people who are new to Linux. It's pretty intuitive but won't consume your machine like most DEs will.CWM is extremely efficient, the minimal window decoration makes it look ugly but chances are you know what's in your windows anyway since you put them there. The one killer feature CWM has that I haven't really seen anywhere else is the instant regex window title search. Virtual desktops/pagers/tagging, none of that matters compared to this one feature. I'd give up being able to move/resize windows before I gave up this it's so incredibly powerful. The one place I still use FVWM is on touchscreen only devices like phones since CWM is almost completely unusable without a keyboard. I haven't owned one for years now though. On corporate laptops running eg OSX I straight up lose windows without it. I'm probably half as productive there (before all the other ridiculous stuff) when you add up all the backtracking from losing context etc.1 https://public.swiley.net/cwmrc↵ Quote Selected Last Edit: 09 October 2025, 14:55:32 by swiley
