I have the same problem on 2 computers.
If I start it from the terminal it gives no output and I also don't get back the prompt so it is running.
Code: [Select]
$ volumeicon
^C
$ volumeicon &

$ ps | grep volumeicon

So I guess the problem is with the panel in awesome.

Not here on Artix OpenRC Xlibre XFCE...
Do you use the package volumeicon, or does xfce have its own icon?  Maybe it's integrated in xfce?

Solved by update to glycin.

I'm sorry, I was to fast to say it was solved yesterday. Today no icon again.
For me it's solved by recompiling gdk-pixbuf2 in the old way. They have put it in the aur now, gdk-pixbuf2-noglycin. I compiled it in the same way, but kept the name gdk-pixbuf2 to get updates from official repo. A lot of packages depend on it, and I prefer to loose the icon again than having a bigger crasch after update.
