Anyone ever try this or use it?
Never heard of it.
Is it linux based??
No it is not Linux based. It is based upon BeOS. Look up BeOS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeOS) to find out what it is.
Yes its like stepping back in the last century its light boots fast has a few programs
The last time I checked it out, it couldn't boot on real hardware, neverthless on a VM it booted almost instantly, responsiveness was immediate and overall I think it could be the best desktop operating system if only it had software and drivers written for it. Back in my testing days it had just a bunch of programs, including Firefox. Because of that it was far from being useful as a daily driver.
It booted here on metal I don't use VMs and actually played music but it really is just nostalgia but yes it was blazingly fast
I tried it this year on real hardware. It works!
It's a blast from the past, but as I couldn't get WiFi working, it was basically hamstrung for me. Will try again if they ever get out of alpha/beta status.
Haiku is sweet! I love the way it looks and how it functions, and it is cool to have an open source BeOS recreation. It also has a package manager, with software like libreoffice and blender:

It is great to have more open source operating systems.
That's funny, i'm playing around with Haiku the last days and it seems pretty usable...atleast if you don't need to use wifi. ;)
Works in a VM and bare-metal as well.
I tried Haiku Beta2 as well from live USB. No wifi and no mount for local disk drives, still playing with resolving these.
Other than that, impressed. Shuts down in around 1 second.

arm versions
Hehe, while my attention was drawn elsewhere they released beta4. https://www.haiku-os.org/get-haiku/r1beta4/release-notes/
Just tried it and oh my, it's a complete OS. Everything actually works, gtk/qt programs, Wine, all the BeOS things are robust and kept their classical look, all with nice and crisp scaling on 4k display. Natively booted on uefi with actual gpu accel of course. Really love it.
And yeah, it's not another distro but another OS :) I'll edit the thread a bit
Beta5: https://www.haiku-os.org/get-haiku/r1beta5/release-notes/
If you have an Nvidia video card, it's really not worth trying this. The developers of this OS are unable to adapt either nouveau or mesa to their product...
They should probably compromise from their end to be able to port some full video drivers from bsd's/linux but i have no idea how different their video stack is.
There is some mesa, you can see the kernel threads for llvmpipe on the cpu.
LE: last news about this almost 3 years ago https://www.phoronix.com/news/Haiku-OS-Zink-RADV
Yes, I saw that and it doesn't work with my video card (Nvidia Gtx650). It only works in vesa mode, with 650x650 resolution.
True, at least on my modern radeon i have the full framebuffer resolution.
I don't remember right with my previous post about beta4 that i had some more gpu features with my older card, seems i was wrong.

A first Mozilla port.
And the nice surprise looking over recent updates a lot of new ports or updates of familiar software. Except for drivers. But i don't complain. Slowly but surely.
I'll add my own twist to this news. In my subjective opinion, they're doing nothing. Instead of porting video drivers, they ported firefox....maybe, in about 20 years, they'll be doing nvidia mesa and Nouveau drivers...
Well, considering the codebase of modern mozilla that even ours truly (linux) distro has had problems with, let alone for something that isn't even bsd. The chromium/qtwebkit stuff was already there for years if you're wondering.
And i don't think nvidia is any small project's priority, Nouveau is nice cause it's blobless truly OSS driver that amd doesn't have, okay, but amd+mostly intel are easiest to get going. Not that i ever read display driver code but i assume that.
...for 20 year old GPUs :)
Yes, in this case, no one disputes that Firefox is a very complex software product, but why is it needed if Nvidia card owners will not be able to appreciate HaikuOs's hard work? I see no logic in this port. Moreover, if chromium/qtwebkit is already in the software repositories, all this work seems to me like equating masturbation with real sex (forgive me for the crude comparison).
I don't see how hardware changes aren't this impossible.
Gnome web/epiphany was also there for a long time so you can add webkitgtk too, that's if hopefully you're not a troll.
No, i am not a troll :) and thank you for your point of view :)
