Hi,
Why is linux far more popular than freebsd, netbsd?
drivers, hw support
Blue Screen of Death, links to satanism (demon logo)? ;D
Partly the License. The BSD License allows you to take the code, modify it, then publish the binaries without providing the source code. Lots of developers didn't / don't like that concept.
IMHO because it found itself in the right place at the right time. Same kind of questions could be raised about why PHP became more popular than Perl or why Wordpress is the most popular CMS in the world, even tho it's crap. It's mostly a matter of circumstances, timing and RNG.
bsd had legal issues that prevented it from devolping and meanwhile Linus Torvalds came along with his little side project. There should be a video about it in off topic that i had posted previously.
Maybe this was that video? try it and see

i wanted to try bsd but it lacks hw support for many devices and i also didn't liked the demon logo bsd have.
I had already seen this interesting video.
But Google also suggests this one which is worth watching:

The “demon” actually refers to something called a daemon, which is a computer program that runs waiting for something to happen (such as a connection from the internet for a web page). The trident refers to the “forking” of processes in the computer.
More info here (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/BSD_Daemon)
yup. still looks like a devil, albeit a cartoonish one.
PC BSD had great support back in the day and better steam support than bsd now has. not sure what changed? maybe proton borked it up for bsd. if you're not gaming and running older hardware, free bsd is still systemd free but not if the folks at chimera get their way.
Yah thats pretty good too i think
Chimera Linux has always been and will be Linux because it uses a linux kernel ...
Then Linux can be accused of Satanism because it uses Daemon concepts ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daemon_(computing)
the word is from Greek mythology, and has nothing to do with Christianity or post Christian Satanism.
I like how BSD uses a literal devil and Linux gets hit for using demons...
Not that facts ever stopped Christians...
It's just FreeBSD that has a demon logo.
OpenBSD and NetBSD do not have it for example.
DragonFly has a nice logo:
https://www.dragonflybsd.org/
but it's a dragon... that's another symbol for lucifer
Yes, there is the word dragon in the English word dragonfly, but not in other languages (French, German, Spanish etc.).
"Dillon named the project after photographing a dragonfly in his yard, while he was still working on FreeBSD.[citation needed]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DragonFly_BSD
An interesting page on the symbolism of this animal:
https://www.oxfordclay.co.uk/blog-1/dragonflies-and-symbolism
But I have not found any relevant reference regarding the choice of this logo for this BSD system...
All of this is based on paganism. And here it would be useful to remember what Christianity says about paganism and worship of idols ...
"paganism" is a christian idea, right?
plenty of christian have idols they love, while hating the ones others like...
Well certainly if you're a practising Christian.
Otherwise if you are Arthur Uther Pendragon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Uther_Pendragon) or of his ilk you probably have little interest listening to Christian pronouncements and diktats.
I'm not religious myself but can see some sense in worshipping the Sun, Earth and fire over and above the mainstream
cults religions.
I am a deist.
Guys, please keep it on topic, or I'll assume the question is answered and close this.
it is easier to spell
apple's based off of bsd. gaming consoles too?
The momentum and circumstances leading to the current state of BSD versus Linux, or (factual, historical) reasons others have mentioned.
I've regularly kept tabs on DistroWatch news related to the various BSDs. It appears on the surface that the FreeBSD project in particular are trying to push the gas on both the desktop accessibility and laptop support, the latter of which is a huge pain point for the former. This doesn't equate to gains in popularity, I am well aware of that since BSD lacks the momentum for such specific use cases. GhostBSD will likely remain the "Linux Mint" of the BSD world, and you know what that might actually be for the best...
The topic is wrong and MISLEADING!
Linux is more popular then BSD is as true as it is false.
Is Linux really more popular when it comes to web hosting?
Is Linux really more popular when we are talking about security.
Is Linux really more popular when it comes to forking to other proprierty operating systems like OSX?
Is Linux really more popular when you just look at the licenses: GPL vs. MIT
I am using Linux and I am loving it.
