Partly the License. The BSD License allows you to take the code, modify it,  then publish the binaries without providing the source code.  Lots of developers didn't / don't like that concept.

IMHO because it found itself in the right place at the right time. Same kind of questions could be raised about why PHP became more popular than Perl or why Wordpress is the most popular CMS in the world, even tho it's crap. It's mostly a matter of circumstances, timing and RNG.

bsd had legal issues that prevented it from devolping and meanwhile Linus Torvalds came along with his little side project.  There should be a video about it in off topic that i had posted previously.

i wanted to try bsd but it lacks hw support for many devices and i also didn't liked the demon logo bsd have.

The “demon” actually refers to something called a daemon, which is a computer program that runs waiting for something to happen (such as a connection from the internet for a web page). The trident refers to the “forking” of processes in the computer.

yup.  still looks like a devil, albeit a cartoonish one.

PC BSD had great support back in the day and better steam support than bsd now has.  not sure what changed?  maybe proton borked it up for bsd.  if you're not gaming and running older hardware, free bsd is still systemd free but not if the folks at chimera get their way.
