Lost NetworkManager icon

My previous posting dealt with services that used to be started because i'd added them to the default bundle, but with my latest (long delayed) upgrade, they had disappeared from the default bundle. That's sorted out but in the process, my NetworkManager icon in the panel has now disappeared. When i right click on the panel and click on the 'Manage Widgets' menu item, select the "Network Monitor" entry, and click on the "Add Widget" button... nothing happens. I've tried this many times, also clicking on the "Close" button (both levels) and nothing ever happens. I also see no output in any log files (at least in /var/log/) that would help me troubleshoot this.

I can add other widgets just fine, but not this particular one. Why would that be?
