Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! 08 December 2024, 23:49:26 First, the Cinnamon devs published Cinnamon 6.4 which broke sound and power applets on Arch-based distros: [solved] cinnamon update breaks sound appletAudio Applet Disappeared after update [[email protected]]Now, they are copying GNOME!new 6.4 sound popup lacks %[WIP] Improved settings UII guess I should switch to another DE!
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #1 – 09 December 2024, 03:51:58 > new 6.4 sound popup lacks %As for the sound thing, could someone provide an example how it looked before vs now? Because this seems like a change for the sake of change, disregarding everyone and everything just because the devs regard the "new" design the one that's "better". Which is how GNOME will die a slow and painless death. 1 Likes
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #2 – 09 December 2024, 07:59:41 I was using Gnome until it got worse with Gnome3.I knew KDE well and had tested what was available at the time.I was looking for a fluid and practical graphical interface.XFCE had always put me off because of its ugliness, but also and above all because I couldn't use it properly. As I was stuck, I took the time to explore XFCE and I realized that it could be made into something beautiful and very practical to use.So I adopted XFCE and realized that it is the most stable graphical environment I know. But for my personal needs, I prefer Dolphin to Thunar, because in Thunar you still can't display the size of files and their modification date under the thumbnails...I have never had a problem with XFCE in all these years. If I had to choose on the QT side, I would go for LXQT which is lightweight and well made. 2 Likes
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #3 – 09 December 2024, 09:06:58 I actually used Cinnamon for a long time and really liked it because it was simple and didn't get in my way, while the workflow suited me almost perfectly. Though eventually I switched to dwm because I wanted to make more elaborate shortcuts and interact with dmenu easily.QuoteAs for the sound thing, could someone provide an example how it looked before vs now?The image on the left is 6.2.7, and the one on the right is a screenshot of 6.4 that I found on the web. I wasn't able to test 6.4 myself because, no matter how much I tried, I couldn't get the volume applet to work. Ironic.I mean, I can see the appeal of such a change, but why not give an option to revert back? Like, yeah, I would want to see the percentage of the volume while changing it, and it seems like a lot of people do too, so why are the devs making decisions for the user? At least add a toggle somewhere in the settings. I guess cinnamon is supposed to be developed for Linux Mint anyway, so XFCE is probably the way to go if you want to be more independent. 2 Likes

Ironic.I can't test Cinnamon 6.4 as well because, it breaks the sound and power applets! I reverted back to the last working version of Cinnamon on my Artix Linux installation.Quote from: MaxLPM – on 09 December 2024, 09:06:58Wow! This is a horrible design! I mean, even Windows 11 shows the percentage of the volume as a number!I guess I should really migrate to XFCE. It's ugly by default but at least it barely changes and I can get a stable DE for a while. 1 Likes

I mean, even Windows 11 shows the percentage of the volume as a number!I wouldn't call it horrible; again, some people actually like it and I don't judge them. Matter of taste. The thing that bothers me is that this is a breaking UI change in an otherwise "stable" DE, with no option to go back. Shoun said it best in the post above. But yeah, a riced XFCE is actually a pretty good alternative 1 Likes
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #6 – 09 December 2024, 16:49:52 The sound & power applets are broken because the Cinnamon package hasn't been updated to 6.4 See here. I downloaded the one from Arch's repo & installed with pacman -U. It's worked perfectly. 1 Likes
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #7 – 09 December 2024, 17:27:35 And I'm just curious, does anyone use cinnamon in their daily work? To be honest, I've never liked it. Then it's better to use a clean gnome plus wayland session....
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #8 – 10 December 2024, 07:50:35 Cinnamon is my daily driver. Used XFCE before that, but I wanted something a little more modern. I don't like the way GNOME 3 + works. Plasma is great but has a few too many bells & whistles for my taste. I find Cinnamon to be a great middle of the road option. I also just prefer the look of GTK apps in general. 2 Likes
Re: Cinnamon is getting Gnomed! Reply #9 – 10 December 2024, 09:00:26 Yep. Exactly as I thought, change for the sake of change, most likely to justify the existence of the people that "redesign" those. You know what's funny - They've had to do only one thing to make it good, only one job. Make it feature complete at the same level as the old one and they failed at something THIS simple. https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/12535 > The worst thing from this situation is gaslighting and downplaying on the github the user feedback here (Which is also really funny and ironic because I've read somewhere that Mint "cared" so much about user input and feedback that they've increased their telemetry reporting a few years back! haha xD). If you look closely what those cowards did which is, locking the issue entirely while removing every reaction and locking adding new ones. One might say, but why am I butthurt about something this small, yeah I agree, that this is actually really trivial thing, but look at this from this way. If they're doing something like this right now, what about future changes that could actually matter? What will stop them from pulling something similar (Essentially pulling an asshat-mozilla-move)? Well nothing, but people should call out such things publicly to make them accountable. The best thing for them would be to ripoff Windows 11 in this case. 3 Likes
