Better to track you with and misinform you my dear

Google is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) mode that more firmly embeds chatbot capabilities into its search engine, aiming to give users the experience of having a conversation with an expert.

The "AI Mode" was made available in the US on Tuesday, appearing as an option in Google's search bar.

The change, unveiled at the company's annual developers conference in Mountain View, California, is part of the tech giant's push to remain competitive against ChatGPT and other AI services, which threaten to erode Google's dominance of online search.

There is an extension to remove the AI overviews from Google search, it's available for Firefox and Chrome based browsers, eg FF version:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hide-google-ai-overviews/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search

I really don't know what they are doing putting this at the top of the search results. It lies and invents things, but sounds very plausible in it's deceit, if you use it for any time and search for things which you know the answer already you can see how dangerous it is. I fear though that the reason is because they control it so can get it to tell the lies that they wish people to hear, like on YouTube certain videos are pushed in the search results and next video stream, often AI generated which were quite likely made by themselves, while ordinary real people who they cannot control directly appear further down and are strung along with empty promises of eventual payment.

I've been testing Kagi for a while and thinking if I should pay, results seem Ok, any thoughts on Kagi or any active Kagi user that can tell me if it is worth it?

Kagi is the way, what Google was before dropping 'Don't Be Evil'. Worth every penny.

Why don't you guys use SearXNG instead of Google's search engine? Google's search engine is really bad these days as they censor a lot of stuff.

There are a ton of meta-search engines that I use regularly that are designed to be privacy-respecting.

One has been noted by @Phosphate5 : SearXNG

The others include:

1. 4get ( find an instance here)
2. Araa (github repo and list of instances here)
3. LibreY (find an instance here)
4. Brave search

All of the above work even when you block all javascript while browsing. There is also Whoogle but it does not work with javascript turned off so I do not use it.

I also look forward to hosting my own search engine on my PC once I figure out how effective it is and how it can be done right. Yacy is my first contender for testing. If anyone knows any that maybe better, please do suggest.

Is an LLM any worse than the typical shitty information source?

Current LLMs will hallucinate and feed you wrong information. So, I guess the LLMs we have these days are worse than typical information sources.

I host my own  SearXNG instance.
At the end of the day it's still spewing out the same poor results as whatever engines I have enabled can provide but without the rest of the clutter and chaff.

The quality of the searching since the Pandemic is in steep decline.  Some of it is the poor state of the internet and the world.  Some of it is business and social choices by the search engines.

There is still google scholar...

If only because SearXNG doesn't make search results better, it makes them from other garbage sources (search engines). And considering that all search engines are equally terrible these days, there's not much point in it...

It does not matter the literally political actors, no matter what country, the agenda runs regardless of actors and country.
The only difference is how the agenda is sold in a given country.
