XFCE4 - version 4.16.0 now here.

Well after waiting to see whether the new major release would clear up the faulty window borders and buttons (not apparent on all hardware, for many people this problem doesn't happen) - it hasn't. In fact now it adds a weird (unintentional I think) splashscreen of psychedelic color just before the desktop starts.  :(
Still, there are some natty new icons.

About the splashscreen issue, do you have an 'RenderBadPicture' error in $HOME/.xsession-errors ?
If so, it might be the issue reported in https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/-/issues/476

The other issue might be related to https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/-/issues/355

There is no .xsession-errors file, apparently it's created by /etc/X11/Xsession which doesn't exist either. That bug was closed by a recent commit so I built xfwm4-git from the AUR and it made no difference. And yes, the other issue is simply a continuation of that older situation. I tried adding MODULES=(nouveau) to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and reinstalling the kernel for early KMS, no difference.
