meltdown etc.. arch kernel 4.14.11-1

HI Guys,

longtime openrc user here. Can you let us know when the relevant mitigations for meltdown and the other branch prediction exploits will be in the artix lts kernel?

Thanks
the cockerel

Our non lts kernel is already patched it is available in the system-testing repos.

EDIT: I didn't really read your question before answering, we will.

I ran short benchmarks before and after KPTI and new firmware. The performance on small-size file copypipe throughput and system calls seem to have been significantly affected.

what is that testing program you ran?

@nous I think you can calculate that from the numbers. I'll do it for those three tests that were particularly impacted:

  • small-size file copy: -36%
  • pipe throughput: -51%
  • system calls: -76%

Holy moly. I had read about the performance degradation but didn't want to believe.

Wow....that is significant to be sure. I can't say that I notice that much of a drop in performance for my needs on my old Dell Studio 1555 w/Intel Core 2 Duo.
I picked up this laptop used for $80 Canadian, spent about $100 for a new screen...pretty good deal. I am keeping my eyes open for an Amd powered laptop now. There are deals to be had if you seek them out. I was able to replace the screen on my present laptop myself...not difficult, so came out of it ok.

Best regards.
