Artix population?

I notice there are some 2000 forum members; about how many Artix users in all?

We don't spy on our users. We don't track users that install Artix. So it is impossible to answer that question.

Would it be possible to count the number of downloads of a specific package – e.g. the kernel – from every mirror? That way it should be possible to estimate the number of users who do update their kernel – thus active users.

That would only give us the number of downloads of a package, not the number of users. I have 2 computers and 4 virtual machines with Artix installed. I am 1 user, not 6.

Not to mention people that reinstall packages. A reinstall would count as a download if the file isn't in the user's pacman cache.

An alternative could be IP logging, but things such as NATs, VPNs and Tor could also throw a monkey wrench at this measuring attempt. Not only that, mirrors would have to agree on storing IP logs (in addition to the gigabytes-upon-gigabytes of packages) and sending them to the developers, and for what reason? Are there investors interested in constant growth of the Artix brand who need that data?

We have no need or desire for that data. Honestly the number of users doesn't effect development.

I wholeheartedly agree. Software development (among other things) in the corporate world is driven by statistical analysis of a "market" or a "target audience". These concepts are (and should be) completely alien to any Libre software developer.

Indeed.
The only data we have is download volumes for iso from our server, without the mirrors.

My browsers don't reveal my exact OS other than it being 64 bit Linux although some OS's do in some instances at least, like Ubuntu and Fedora. So web page hit stats can only give an indication of total Linux usage. Some software crash reports would include this, although whether they would all distinguish between Arch and Artix I don't know, e.g. this Firefox crash was on Arch Linux
I haven't found any published stats of crash numbers based on Linux distro from a brief search.
Bug reports on popular software might give another comparison for a very rough estimate of market share, KDE bugzilla has 26 bugs containing "Artix" and 2894 containing "Arch Linux" and Gnome bugzilla has 10 for "Artix" and 4600 for "Arch Linux" but Arch has been around longer and the terms arch and linux could occur unrelated in other contexts.

This only means KDE and Gnome are more stable on Artix.  8)

In January 2021, our secondary server delivered around 200GB of ISO images and goaccess showed around 400 downloaders. The primary server had roughly 3X those numbers. This month, which still has 10 days left, the numbers were over 3TB/5000 for the secondary and 6.5TB/6500 for the primary server. This would project to at least 15000 downloaders, only from the 2 Artix servers, not counting the 6 major mirrors around the world listed before ours plus the primary mirror1 of @Nadir plus the unaccounted torrent downloads. I'd say it's fair to estimate a total of at least 50,000 downloads for this month alone and even if only 10% of people who installed Artix in 2021 actually stayed with it, we might talk about 30-40,000 new users this year. We had a talk in #artix-dev last year, where we had estimated a user base of around 100K at the time. I believe we're double that number today.
