Kudos for pinning down the source of the problem and posting a workarand. Akonadi in 5.24 needs a working mariadb setup or it won't run, affecting other applications (like kmail) -- perhaps I'm not describing the issue correctly, but earlier community-qt ISOs didn't have such problems.
