I've tried changing settings in inputs/codecs from VDPAU to VAAPI but nothing works. I'm stumped

this error happens from my other computer, but it works. I use NVIDIA on both.

I uninstalled libva-vdpau-driver and now it works. Was this package not supposed to be installed?

Your result states an affirmative to that.
I use Nvidia "dkms" video driver with only libvdpau and lib32-libvdpau and stuff has worked so far. One has to tweak their environment to the unique combination of variables when getting a system running and running well.

This is still potentially a vlc bug. Having a package installed shouldn't crash an application. In your case, VDPAU is pretty dated and abandoned (nvidia uses nvdec nowadays) so maybe consider not using it at all. Depends on your gpu and all that of course.
